Brake Indicator Inoperative

  1. If brakes diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If brakes diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to BRAKES DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Observe brake warning indicator. Turn ignition on. This will activate Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) bulb check. If brake warning indicator illuminates briefly during bulb check, go to next step. If brake warning indicator does not illuminate briefly during bulb check, go to step  12 .
  3. Turn ignition on. Apply parking brake. If brake warning indicator illuminates, go to next step. If brake warning indicator does not illuminate, go to step  5 .
  4. Inspect brake fluid level. If brake fluid level is okay, go to step  6 . If brake fluid level is low, top off fluid level and check for worn brake pads or brake fluid leak.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect parking brake warning light switch located on parking brake pedal assembly under left side of instrument panel. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between ground and parking brake warning light switch connector terminal. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe PARK BRAKE SWITCH status. If PARK BRAKE SWITCH status is not ON, go to step  7 . If PARK BRAKE SWITCH status is ON, go to step  10 .
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect brake fluid level switch located on side of master cylinder reservoir. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between brake fluid level switch connector terminals. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, monitor LOW BRAKE FLUID status. If LOW BRAKE FLUID status is not ON, go to step  8 . If LOW BRAKE FLUID status is ON, go to step  9 .
  7. Turn ignition off. Check for open or high resistance in Black or Light Blue wire between brake fluid level switch and IPC connector C2 terminal B1. See Figure . If circuit is okay, go to step  10 . If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  16 .
  8. Check for open or high resistance in Purple wire between brake fluid level switch and IPC connector C2 terminal B4. If circuit is okay, go to next step. If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  16 .
  9. Check for open or high resistance in Black/White wire between brake fluid level switch and ground. If circuit is okay, go to step  11 . If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  16 .
  10. Check for poor connections at park brake warning light switch connector. If connections are okay, go to step  13 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  16 .
  11. Check for poor connections at brake fluid level switch connector. If connections are okay, go to step  14 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  16 .
  12. Check for poor connections at IPC connectors. If connections are okay, go to step  15 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  16 .
  13. Replace parking brake warning light switch. After repairs, go to step  16 .
  14. Replace brake fluid level switch. After repairs, go to step  16 .
  15. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  16. After repairs, recheck operation of brake indicator. If indicator operates properly, repair is complete. If indicator does not operate properly, go to step  2 .
