Test G: Fuel Gauge Inaccurate Or Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS from INSTRUMENT CLUSTER menu. Select FUEL GAUGE TEST. Command fuel gauge from empty to full and back. If fuel gauge responds as commanded, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not respond as specified, go to step  4 .
  3. Disconnect in-line connector C400 (Black, 8-pin). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and connector C400 (instrument cluster side) terminal "C" (Blue/Black wire). See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to step  5 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  6 .
  4. Inspect instrument cluster harness connector for poor connections. Repair connector as necessary and go to step  2 . If connector is okay, go to step  8 .
  5. Check for open or high resistance in fuel sender ground circuit (Black wire) between fuel sender harness connector terminal "C" and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair circuit as necessary and go to step  7 . If circuit is okay, go to step  9 .
  6. Check for open or high resistance in fuel level signal circuit (Blue/Black wire) between fuel level sender harness connector terminal "D" and instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 20. See Figure . Repair circuit as necessary and go to step  7 . If circuit is okay, go to step  10 .
  7. Reconnect all harness connectors and reinstall all components. Check fuel gauge operation. If fuel gauge operates properly, system is okay. If fuel gauge does not operate properly, go to step  2 .
  8. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  7 .
  9. Check for poor connections at in-line connector C400 terminals "D" and "G". Check for poor connections at fuel sender connector terminals "C" and "D". Repair connectors as necessary and go to step  7 . If connectors are okay, go to step  11 .
  10. Inspect instrument cluster harness connector for poor connections. Repair connector as necessary and go to step  3 . If connector is okay, go to step  8 .
  11. Replace fuel tank sender. See FUEL TANK SENDER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  7 .
