Test J: Fuel Cap Missing Indicator Always On

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Engine Control Module (ECM) harness connector C2. Turn ignition on. If FUEL CAP indicator is on, go to next step. If FUEL CAP indicator is not on, go to step  4 .
  3. Check for short to ground in fuel cap indicator control circuit (Gray wire) between ECM harness connector C2 terminal No. 22 and instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 3. See Figure . Repair circuit as necessary and go to step  6 . If circuit is okay, go to step  5 .
  4. Replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Go to step  6 .
  5. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step.
  6. Operate system to verify repair. If symptom still exists, go to step  2 . If symptom does not exist, system is okay.
