Test I: Tachometer Inaccurate/Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. If tachometer is inoperative, go to next step. If tachometer is operative, go to step  4 .
  3. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS from the INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER menu. Command tachometer from 7000 RPM to zero RPM and back. If tachometer responds as commanded, go to step  5 . If tachometer does not respond as commanded, go to step  6 .
  4. If tachometer is inaccurate, go to step  7 . If tachometer is accurate, test is complete.
  5. Repair open in Green wire between ECM connector C2 terminal No. 35 and gauge cluster terminal No. 13. See Figure . Go to step  8 .
  6. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  8 .
  7. Using scan tool, select ENGINE SPEED from scan tool display data list. Compare RPM reading on scan tool to RPM reading on tachometer. If readings are about the same, system is okay. If readings are not about the same, go to step  6 .
  8. Operate system to verify repair. If symptom still exists, go to step  2 . If symptom does not exist, system is okay.
