Test H: Speedometer &/Or Odometer Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS from INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER menu. Command instrument panel speedometer from 140 MPH to zero and back again. If speedometer responds as commanded, go to next step. If speedometer does not respond as commanded, go to step  4 .
  3. Check for Engine Control Module (ECM) DTC P0500. If code is present, perform appropriate diagnostic procedure. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If code is not present, go to step  5 .
  4. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  7 .
  5. Check for open or short to ground in Blue/Red wire between Electronic Brake/Traction Control Module (EBTCM) harness connector terminal No. 23 and instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 23. See Figure . Repair circuit as necessary. Go to step  7 . If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  6. Repair open in Blue/Red wire between gauge cluster harness connector terminal No. 9 and splice S222. See Figure . Go to next step.
  7. Reconnect all harness connectors and reinstall all components. Check speedometer operation. If speedometer operates properly, system is okay. If speedometer does not operate properly, go to step  2 .
