Rear Axle Lower Control Arm Bushings: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  2. Remove the brake bracket retainer screw. Disconnect the road sensing suspension position sensor and the bracket from the shock tower.
  3. If replacing the right side bushing, lower the exhaust system and heat shield. Install the screw jack under the rear suspension support forward arm. Remove the forward arm nuts and bolts. See Figure and Figure .
  4. CAUTION: While lowering the suspension support, carefully watch the position of the brake calipers, hoses and pipes in order to prevent damage during the removal procedure.
  5. Slowly lower the forward arm only as far as required in order to gain tool clearance (approximately 5 inches). Insert Rear Control Arm Bushing Service Set (J 35739) between forward arm flanges.
  6. Coat the threads of the Long Bolt with Bearings (J 21474-19) from Bushing/Remover Installer Set (J 21474) with high pressure lubricant in order to prevent thread damage. See SPECIAL TOOLS  .
  7. Install Rear Control Arm Bushing Service Set (J 35739), Receiver (J 21474-5), Long Nut (J 21474-18) and Long Bolt with Bearing (J21474-19). See SPECIAL TOOLS  .
  8. Draw the bushing out of the forward arm by tightening the nut. See Figure .
