Code C1738: ELC Exhaust Solenoid Valve Short To Ground Or Open Circuit

  1. Perform CVRSS system check. See CVRSS SYSTEM CHECK  . After performing CVRSS system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Check output voltage of 30-amp ELC MAXI fuse in trunk compartment. Maxifuse is hot at all times. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 7).
  3. Disconnect ELC compressor assembly connector. Using DVOM, measure voltage between exhaust solenoid input circuit (Orange wire) of ELC compressor assembly harness connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 12).
  4. Using DVOM, measure resistance between exhaust solenoid output circuit (White wire) and exhaust solenoid input circuit (Orange wire) of ELC compressor assembly connector (component side). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If resistance is 25-35 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 25-35 ohms, go to step 13).
  5. Disconnect 32-pin CVRSS control module connector C3. Check continuity between exhaust solenoid output circuit (White wire) of CVRSS control module harness connector C3 and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 14). If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  6. Check for open or poor connection in exhaust solenoid output circuit (White wire). Repair as necessary. After repairs, perform CVRSS SYSTEM CHECK  . If circuit is okay, go to step 10).
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ELC compressor assembly connector.
  8. Check continuity between exhaust solenoid input circuit (Orange wire) of ELC compressor assembly harness connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Also, check continuity between ELC compressor motor power supply circuit (Dark Green wire) of ELC compressor assembly harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 14). If circuits are okay, go to next step.
  9. Using DVOM, measure resistance between specified circuits of ELC compressor assembly connector (component side). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
    • Compressor motor power supply circuit (Dark Green wire) and ground.
    • Compressor motor power supply circuit (Dark Green wire) and compressor motor ground circuit (Black wire).
    • Exhaust solenoid input circuit (Orange wire) and ground.
    • Exhaust solenoid input circuit (Orange wire) and compressor motor ground circuit (Black wire).

If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 13). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to step 11).

  10. Check exhaust solenoid output circuit (White wire), exhaust solenoid input circuit (Orange wire), and 30-amp ELC MAXI fuse power supply circuit (Red wire) for debris, corrosion and/or intermittent opens. Check for intermittent short to ground in exhaust solenoid output circuit (White wire). Reinstall/reconnect all components/connectors. Clear codes, and then wait 60 seconds. Display codes. If Code C1738 is set, go to step 15). If Code C1738 is not set, perform CVRSS SYSTEM CHECK  .
  11. Check for intermittent short to ground in compressor motor power supply circuit (Dark Green wire), exhaust solenoid input circuit (Orange wire) and within ELC compressor assembly pigtail. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 14).
  12. Repair open in exhaust solenoid input circuit (Orange wire). After repairs, perform CVRSS SYSTEM CHECK  .
  13. Replace ELC compressor assembly and all related air lines. After repairs, go to next step.
  14. Check 30-amp ELC MAXI fuse in trunk compartment for proper operation. Repair as necessary. After repairs, perform CVRSS SYSTEM CHECK  .
  15. Turn ignition off. Replace CVRSS control module. Reinstall/reconnect all components/connectors. Install scan tool. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Calibrate NEW CVRSS control module. See CALIBRATING CVRSS CONTROL MODULE  under ADJUSTMENTS. Perform CVRSS SYSTEM CHECK  .
