Timing Belt: Removal
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Cadillac Catera and 1998 Cadillac Catera. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove MAF sensor (10). See Fig 1. Remove the intake resonance switchover valve assembly (3). Remove and label electrical connector and vacuum lines at switchover valve solenoid and vacuum reservoir (4). Remove Intake resonator (7).
- Remove intake plenum. See INTAKE PLENUM
- Place cylinder No. 1 to TDC of compression stroke. Remove front timing belt cover. See FRONT TIMING BELT COVER .
- Visually inspect the timing belt for cracks and wear. If cracks or wear are present, do not reuse the belt.
- Remove harmonic balancer bolts. See Fig 2
- Remove harmonic balancer.
- Rotate engine clockwise to 60 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). See Fig 3.IMPORTANT: Ensure timing marks are not 180 degrees out from TDC. The reference marks on the camshaft gears should be aligned with the corresponding notches on the rear timing belt cover at this point. If they are not aligned, the engine is 180 degrees off.
- Install Crankshaft Holder (J42069-10)
- Using J 42098, carefully rotate engine in rotational direction (Clockwise) until holder contacts water pump. See Fig 4. Secure the moveable lever of the tool to the water pump pulley flange. Ensure alignment marks on camshaft gears align with corresponding marks on rear timing belt cover. Install Camshaft Gear Holders (J42069-1 and J42069-2). See Fig 5.IMPORTANT: Do not remove J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 while the belt is removed.
- Loosen the timing belt tensioner and idler pulleys.
- Remove timing belt.IMPORTANT: After timing belt is removed, never turn camshaft and crankshaft independently. If turned, interference may occur among pistons and valves, and parts related to pistons and valves may be damaged.
