Instrument Cluster Diagnostic System Check

NOTE: It may be necessary to cycle ignition switch OFF and ON many times during this test procedure
  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. On 1997 models, the air bag indicator light will come on for 4 seconds then turn off. On 1998 models, the air bag indicator light will flash 7 times and turn off. On all models, coolant temperature gauge indicates current coolant temperature. CHECK ENGINE light will remain on until engine is started. Fasten seat belt indicator light comes on for 4 seconds and then flashes until seatbelt is fastened. Fuel gauge will indicate current amount of fuel in tank. Oil pressure indicator light will remain on until engine is started. Charging system indicator light will remain on until engine is started. BRAKE TO SHIFT indicator light will remain on until engine is started. The following indicators will illuminate for 4 seconds when key is turned to ON position, then turn off.
    • Antilock Brake (ABS) Warning
    • Brake Pad Wear Warning
    • Automatic Transmission Warning
    • Coolant Temperature Warning
    • Low Oil Level Warning
    • Low Fuel Warning
    • Low Coolant Warning
    • Low Washer Fluid

    If all indicator lights and gauges function as specified, go to next step. If indicator lights and gauges do not function as specified, go to available diagnostic table in SYMPTOM TESTING.

  2. Start engine and allow to idle. After engine is started, air bag indicator will flash 7 times and turn off (air bag indicator will stay on for 4 seconds and turn off on 1997 models). If air bag indicator operates as specified, go to next step. If air bag indicator does not operate as specified, repair air bag related problem. See procedures in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  3. While engine is at idle, monitor oil pressure gauge. If oil pressure is greater than 20 PSI, go to next step. If oil pressure is less than 20 PSI, go to ENGINE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE INACCURATE/INOPERATIVE , OIL PRESSURE GAUGE ALWAYS INDICATES LOW (OIL PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT AND OIL PRESSURE OKAY)  or OIL PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT INOPERATIVE , OIL PRESSURE GAUGE ALWAYS INDICATES LOW under SYMPTOM TESTING. 
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Select INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  from scan tool display functions. If scan tool communicates with vehicle, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with vehicle, repair class 2 serial data line or related circuit for DLC. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. If any current Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are displayed, go to TESTING - DIAGNOSTIC  and perform appropriate DTC test. If no current DTCs are displayed, go to next step.
  6. If any history DTCs are displayed, go to TESTING - DIAGNOSTIC  and perform appropriate DTC test. Before performing DTC diagnostic procedure, try wiggling sensor wires and connector to check for intermittent operation by monitoring scan tool display. If problem in circuit is pinpointed, the code will go to current status. If no history DTCs are displayed, system is okay. Recheck system operation.
