SSS Solenoid Valve: Removal
- Ensure wheels are in straight ahead position and steering wheel is locked. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Disconnect RSS position sensor and exhaust "Y" pipe at converter. Remove steering column intermediate shaft lower coupling pinch bolt. Disconnect steering column intermediate shaft lower coupling from rack and pinion stub shaft.CAUTION: Failure to disconnect steering shaft coupling from rack and pinion assembly shaft may damage these components, possibly resulting in loss of steering control after installation. DO NOT start engine with hoses removed, as severe pump damage will result.
- Remove cotter pins and castle nuts from outer tie rod ends. Separate tie rod ends from steering knuckles using Steering Linkage Puller (J-24319-01
). Remove fluid line plastic retainer. Disconnect pressure switch electrical connector. Disconnect pressure and return lines from rack and pinion assembly.CAUTION: DO NOT lower rear of engine frame too far. Engine components near firewall may be damaged.
- Disconnect Speed-Sensitive Steering (SSS) solenoid valve electrical connector. Support rear of engine frame with jack to allow lowering of engine frame. Loosen, but DO NOT remove, front engine frame bolts. Remove rear engine frame bolts. Lower rear engine frame about 4".
- Remove rack and pinion assembly mounting bolts. Remove hidden retaining bolt inside frame. Remove rack and pinion assembly through left wheel opening. Remove SSS solenoid valve and manifold assembly. Inspect all bushings and gasket for excessive wear. Replace as necessary.
