Variable Effort Steering
Speed-sensitive steering system varies the amount of power assist applied to the steering system according to vehicle speed. At low speed, more power assist is applied to system, resulting in light steering effort for increased maneuverability. As vehicle speed increases, less power assist is applied to system, resulting in increased steering effort. At highway speeds, steering almost feels like manual steering. This provides maximum control and enhanced stability.
Steering effort is controlled by regulating the amount of power steering pump pressure applied to the steering rack. Steering Assist Solenoid Valve (SASV) controls amount of pressure. See ELECTRICAL COMPONENT LOCATIONS table. Speed-sensitive suspension module cycles the SASV on and off at varying rates based on vehicle speed signal from Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
