A/T - Early or Soft Upshifts

Bulletin No. T 86-10

Number 126
Corp. Ref. No. 805 7006
Date Oct. '85
SUBJECT: EARLY OR SOFT UPSHIFTS, MISADJUSTED T.V. CABLE - THM 125C

MODELS AFFECTED: 1985 CIMARRON EQUIPPED WITH 2.8L ENGINE

Some 1985 Cimarrons equipped with the 2.8L V-6 engine and automatic transaxle may exhibit early or soft upshifts due to a misadjusted throttle valve (T.V.) cable. Readjusting the T.V. cable will correct the condition. However, after repeated wide open throttle (WOT) maneuvers some T.V. cables can become misadjusted again.

Figure 1 - T.V. Cable Adjuster:

This change in adjustment can occur if the T.V. cable readjust tab spring (refer to Figure 1) is not strong enough to maintain the proper cable setting during a WOT maneuver. If the spring is not strong enough, the cable can continue to adjust outward resulting in shorter than required T.V. cable travel.
Beginning with VIN broadcast number FJ511770, a new stronger spring was included in the T.V. cable assembly. When servicing a Cimarron produced prior to the above break point for this condition, replace the T.V. cable assembly with P/N 14101470 using the following information.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTICE: Shift points and transaxle durability can be effected by this adjustment.

1. Remove the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor, located in the fresh air inlet tube between the air cleaner assembly and the engine throttle body assembly. Do not remove either the air cleaner or throttle body.

Figure 2 - T.V. Cable Routing:

2. Remove the T.V. cable assembly and install T.V. cable assembly P/N 14101470. Ensure correct routing of the cable assembly (refer to Figure 2). For detailed cable replacement service procedure and routing instructions, refer to the 1985 Cimarron Service Information Manual, final revision. Reinstall the MAF sensor.

Figure 1 - T.V. Cable Adjuster:

3. With the engine off, adjust the T.V. cable as follows:

A. Reset cable to readjust position (refer to Figure 1):
- Depress and hold metal readjust tab while moving the cable to the readjust position.
- Release readjust tab.

B. Adjust cable by rotating the THROTTLE LEVER to the WOT position. The T.V. cable and slider will ratchet to the proper set position.

4. Ensure proper TV system operation. Road test the vehicle and evaluate shift feel and verify WOT detent downshifts are available. T.V. cable adjustment should remain in the proper position. If not, check for binding or misrouted cable.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Use Labor Operation K6200 for 0.3 hours to replace the T.V. cable assembly on 2.8L V-6 models.
