Valve Springs: Installation
- Install valve stem seals. Position valve spring and rotator on head. Using spring compressor (J-5892-1 ) or equivalent, compress valve spring and install valve keepers. Check spring and keepers to make sure they are properly seated.
- Measure valve stem height whenever new valve is installed or after grinding valves. Use stem height gauge (J-25289 ) as shown in Fig 1. There should be at least .015" (.38 mm) clearance between gauge and valve stem. If clearance between is less than .015" (.38 mm) grind tip as required, making sure end is ground 90° to stem.
- Measure clearance between gauge and valve rotator. Clearance must be .030" (.76 mm) minimum. If any valve is less than .005" (.13 mm) above rotator, valve is too short and must be replaced. See Fig 2.
