Circuit/System Description

The Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module displays the engine coolant temperature, fuel level, vehicle speed and the engine speed based on the information from the engine control module (ECM). The ECM sends information via serial data to the body control module (BCM). The BCM then sends the information via serial data to the Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module to display the engine coolant temperature, fuel level, the engine speed, the vehicle speed and the distance travelled, either in kilometers or miles, based on the vehicle requirements.

The Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module and the Body Control Module each store odometer information. The Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module compares to two values and if they do not match, the Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module displays "----" (dashes) to indicate an issue. The Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module can also display "----" (dashes) if there is a loss of serial data communication issue with the Body Control Module. Once these issues are resolved, the Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module will display the correct odometer value.
