Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Buick Regal and 2019 Buick Regal. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Transfer components as necessary.
  2. If the removed transmission will be reinstalled, clean the threads of the torque converter.
    3. NOTE:

    A second technician is required.

  3. Raise the transmission with the transmission jack and position the transmission to the engine.

    CAUTION:

    Fastener Caution

    Install the transmission bolt (1) and tighten a first pass to 10 N.m (89 lb in), in order to align the transmission and the engine flush.

    Transmission Bolt (1) - Install and tighten 58 N.m (43 lb ft)

    Tighten the transmission bolt a final pass to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

  7. Remove the transmission jack.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Raise the engine/transmission unit into original position, using the EN-51007  fixture.

    CAUTION:

    Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution

    Install 4 NEW transmission mount to transmission bolts (1) and tighten a first pass to 100 N.m (74 lb ft)

  11. Tighten the 4 NEW transmission mount to transmission bolts (1) a final pass to 60 - 75 degrees, using the EN-45059  meter.
  12. Raise the vehicle.

    Torque Converter @ Flex Plate - Install

    1. Turn the engine at the crankshaft balancer (3) clockwise (arrow) with a suitable tool (2), until a torque converter thread shows up.
      2. NOTE:

      Service may offer bolts without micro-encapsulated thread locking adhesive. If this is the case, apply thread locking adhesive to the bolt.

    2. Install the first NEW torque converter bolt (1) and tighten to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).
    3. Turn the engine at the crankshaft balancer clockwise 60 degrees.
    4. Install the next NEW torque converter bolt and tighten to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).
    5. Repeat the previous 2 steps until the sixth torque converter bolt is installed.
  14. Starter - Install - Starter Replacement (3.6L LGX)

    Transmission Bolt (1) - Install and tighten 58 N.m (43 lb ft)

    Transmission Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [2x] 58 N.m (43 lb ft)

  17. Power Transfer Unit Case - Install - Power Transfer Unit Case Replacement

    Engine Control Module and Engine Wiring Harness Bracket (2) & Wiring Harness (1) - Reposition

  19. Engine Control Module and Engine Wiring Harness Bracket Bolt (3) - Install and tighten 9 N.m (80 lb in)
  20. Three-Way Catalytic Converter - Install [2x] - Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement (Bank 1) , or Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement (Bank 2)

    Remove the left drive shaft (1) from the hoist (3).

  22. Front Wheel Drive Half Shaft - Left Side @ Transmission - Connect - Front Wheel Drive Half Shaft Replacement - Left Side

    Remove the right drive shaft (2) from the hoist (1).

  24. Front Wheel Drive Half Shaft - Right Side @ Transfer Case - Connect - Front Wheel Drive Half Shaft Replacement - Right Side (AWD)
  25. Transmission Control Module Bracket - Install - Transmission Control Module Bracket Replacement 
  26. Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe - Install - Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement (9T50/9T60)
  27. Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe - Install - Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement (9T50/9T60)
  28. Drivetrain and Front Suspension Cradle - Install - Drivetrain and Front Suspension Cradle Replacement (LGX)
  29. Propeller Shaft - Install - Propeller Shaft Replacement
  30. Exhaust Front Pipe - Install - Exhaust Front Pipe Replacement (LGX AWD)
  31. Lower the vehicle.

    Engine Control Module and Engine Wiring Harness Bracket (1) - Reposition

  33. Engine Control Module and Engine Wiring Harness Bracket Bolt (2) - Install and tighten 58 N.m (43 lb ft)
  34. Transmission Stud (4) - Install and tighten [2x] 58 N.m (43 lb ft)
  35. Transmission Bolt (3) - Install and tighten 58 N.m (43 lb ft)

    Battery Negative Cable (1) - Reposition

  37. Wiring Harness Retainer (2) @ Transmission Control Module Bracket - Install
  38. Battery Negative Cable Ground Bolt (3) - Install and tighten 22 N.m (16 lb ft)

    Electrical Connector (2) @ Transmission - Connect

  40. Electrical Connector (1) @ Transmission Control Module - Connect

    Wiring Harness (2) & Engine Control Module and Engine Wiring Harness Bracket (4) - Reposition

  42. Engine Control Module and Engine Wiring Harness Bracket Bolt (1) - Install and tighten 22 N.m (16 lb ft)
  43. Electrical Connector (3) @ Automatic Transmission Auxiliary Fluid Accumulator - Connect
  44. Transmission Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket - Install - Automatic Transmission Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement

    Battery Positive Cable (5) & Generator and Starter Cable Bracket (1, 3) - Reposition

  46. Wiring Harness Retainer (6) @ Transmission Stud - Install
  47. Generator and Starter Cable Bracket Nut (4) - Install and tighten 9 N.m (80 lb in)
  48. Transmission Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Bolt (2) - Install and tighten 22 N.m (16 lb ft)

    Range Selector Lever Cable (1) - Reposition

  50. Range Selector Lever Cable (1) @ Transmission Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket (3) - Install
  51. Range Selector Lever Cable (1) @ Range Selector Lever Cable Lever (4) - Install
  52. Automatic Transmission Range Selector Lever Cable Bolt (2) - Install and tighten 9 N.m (80 lb in)
  53. Range Selector Lever Cable - Adjust - Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment

    Wiring Harness (6) - Reposition

  55. Wiring Harness Retainer (1) @ Control Valve Body Cover Stud - Install [2x]
  56. Wiring Harness Retainer (5) @ Transmission Control Module Bracket - Install
  57. Wiring Harness Retainer (3) @ Transmission Case - Install
  58. Electrical Connector (4) @ Engine Coolant Fan - Connect
  59. Input Speed Sensor Electrical Connector (2) - Connect
  60. Air Cleaner Bracket - Install - Air Cleaner Bracket Replacement
  61. Transmission Fluid - Fill - Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill 
  62. Run all necessary programming and setup procedures. Control Module References
  63. Road test the vehicle.
