Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement - Left Side  and/or Cylinder Head Replacement - Right Side .
  2. Remove the lifter guide bolts (211).
  3. NOTE: Note the installed position of the guides. The notched area of the guide is to align with the locating tab of the block.
  4. Remove the lifter guides (210) with lifters.

    NOTE: Some valve lifters may be stuck in their bores because of gum or varnish deposits.
  6. Use the J 3049-A  or equivalent in order to remove the valve lifters, if necessary. See Special Tools .

  8. Remove the valve lifters (209, 219) from the guide (210).

  10. Organize or mark the components so that they can be installed in the same location from which they were removed. The displacement on demand lifters are installed into the guide by aligning the notched area of the guide (1) with the raised surface on the side of the lifter (2).
  11. Clean and inspect the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter and Guide Cleaning and Inspection (5.3L) .
