Circuit/System Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Ignition OFF, Inspect the circuits of the appropriate camshaft position (CMP) sensor for the following conditions:
    • Routed too close to the ignition coils
    • Routed too close to after-market add-on electrical equipment
    • Routed too close to solenoids, relays, and motors
    • If a condition is found, repair as necessary.
  2. Ignition OFF, remove the fuse that supplies B+ to terminal X2-36 of the ECM.
  3. Disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate CMP sensor.
  4. IMPORTANT: The control module or the sensor may be damaged if the circuit is shorted to B+.
  5. Test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
    • If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance, or for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  6. Install the fuse that supplies B+ to terminal X2-36 of the ECM.
  7. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal 3 and ground.
    • If less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuits/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
    • If greater than specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  8. Test for 4.5-5.5 volts between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground.
    • If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
    • If greater than specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  9. Ignition OFF, remove the appropriate CMP sensor. Inspect the CMP sensor and the camshaft actuator reluctor wheel for the following conditions:
    • Incorrect sensor installation
    • A cracked or damaged sensor
    • The sensor coming in contact with the reluctor wheel
    • Excessive air gap between the reluctor wheel and the sensor
    • Foreign material passing between the sensor and the camshaft reluctor wheel
    • Camshaft reluctor wheel damage
    • If a condition is found, repair as necessary.
  10. If all circuits/connections test normal, replace the CMP sensor.
