Installation Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Pontiac Montana SV6, 2006 Chevrolet Uplander, and 2006 Buick Terraza. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Carefully remove the protection sleeve from the new crankshaft rear oil seal.
- Install the crankshaft rear oil seal into the J 34686 by sliding the crankshaft rear oil seal over the mandrel using a twisting motion until the back of the crankshaft rear oil seal bottoms squarely against the collar of the tool. See Special Tools .
- Install the J 34686 onto the rear of the crankshaft. See Special Tools . Hand tighten the screws in order to ensure the seal will be installed squarely over the crankshaft.
- Install the crankshaft rear oil seal to the crankshaft.
- Tighten the wing nut on the J 34686 until it bottoms. See Special Tools .
- Remove the J 34686 from the crankshaft. See Special Tools .
- Install the engine flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
IMPORTANT:
Note the direction of the rear oil seal. The new design seal is a reverse style as opposed to what has been used in the past. "THIS SIDE OUT" has been stamped into the seal, as shown in the graphic.
IMPORTANT:
Do not apply or use any oil lubrication on the crankshaft rear oil seal or the seal installer J 34686
. See Special Tools . Do not touch the sealing lip of the oil seal once the protective sleeve is removed. Doing so will damage/deform the seal.
Clean the crankshaft sealing surface with a clean, lint free towel. Inspect lead in edge of crankshaft for burrs/sharp edges that could damage the rear main oil seal. Remove burrs/sharp edges with a crocus cloth before proceeding.
