Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Pontiac Montana SV6, 2006 Chevrolet Uplander, and 2006 Buick Terraza. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    NOTE: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.
  1. Lock the steering column using the J 42640  . See Special Tools .
  2. Remove the dash insulator.
  3. Disconnect the intermediate shaft seal from the steering column.
  4. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering column. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  5. Push the intermediate shaft down in order to collapse the intermediate shaft.

  6. Remove the intermediate shaft seal bolts.
    7. IMPORTANT: It may be necessary to remove the lower portion of the intermediate shaft seal from the steering gear.
  7. Remove the intermediate shaft seal.
