Test Description

1 Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? - Go to Step 2  Go to Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Start the engine.
  3. Monitor the DTC information with the scan tool.
Does the scan tool display any other DTCs set?
- Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List Go to Step 3 
IMPORTANT: If a mechanical engine knock can be heard, repair the engine mechanical condition before continuing with this diagnostic test.
  1. Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data for this DTC.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze/Frame Failure Records.
Did the DTC set?
- Go to Step 4  Go to Intermittent Conditions

  1. Disconnect the affected knock sensor (KS) harness.
  2. Set the DMM to the 400K ohm scale.
  3. Measure the resistance of the KS using the DMM that is connected to a good ground.
Is the resistance of the KS near the specified range?
100K Ω Go to Step 5  Go to Step 9

  1. With the DMM that is still connected, set the DMM to the 400 mV AC Hertz scale. Refer to Measuring Frequency in Wiring Systems.
  2. IMPORTANT: DO NOT tap on plastic engine components.
  3. Tap on the engine block near the affected KS while observing the signal that is indicated on the DMM.
Is any signal indicated on the DMM while tapping on the engine block near the KS?
- Go to Step 6  Go to Step 9

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) harness connector.
  3. Test the KS circuit for an open or high resistance, for a short to ground or for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 11  Go to Step 7

  1. Inspect the KS signal circuit for a bad terminal connection at the affected KS.
  2. Repair any conditions that are found. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 11  Go to Step 8

  1. Inspect the KS signal circuit for a bad terminal connection at the PCM.
  2. Repair any conditions that are found. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 11  Go to Step 10 
9 Replace the affected KS. Refer to Knock Sensor (KS) 1 Replacement or Knock Sensor (KS) 2 Replacement .
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 11  -
10 Replace the PCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Replacement .
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 11  -

  1. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze/Frame Failure Records.
Did the DTC fail this ignition?
- Go to Step 2  Go to Step 12 
12 Observe the Capture Info with a scan tool.
Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed?
- Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List System OK
