Wipers Inoperative - All Modes

1 Did you perform the Wiper/Washer Diagnostic System Check? Go to Step 2  Go to Diagnostic System Check - Wiper/Washer

  1. Turn ON the ignition.
  2. Attempt to operate the wipers in each mode.
Do the windshield wipers operate in any mode?		 Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems Go to Step 3

  1. Turn the Windshield Wiper/Washer switch to the High speed position.
  2. Disconnect the windshield wiper motor.
  3. Probe the windshield wiper motor high and low speed circuits with a test lamp connected to a good ground.
Does the test lamp illuminate for either circuit?		 Go to Step 8  Go to Step 4

  1. Remove the wiper relay and wiper HI relay from the underhood fuse block. Refer to Relay Replacement (Within an Electrical Center) or Relay Replacement (Attached to Wire Harness) in Wiring Systems.
  2. Turn the ON ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Test for voltage at the Wiper relay and wiper HI relay B+ feed terminals between the relay sockets and a good Ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?		 Go to Step 12  Go to Step 5

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Test for an open between the output circuit of the wiper relay and the wiper HI relay.
  3. Test both HI and LOW circuits between the wiper HI relay and the windshield wiper motor. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?		 Go to Step 12  Go to Step 6

  1. Reinstall the wiper relay.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Turn the windshield wiper switch to the Low position.
  4. Using a test lamp, test the output circuit of the wiper relay circuit at the wiper HI relay socket.
Does the test lamp illuminate?		 Go to Step 7  Go to Step 9

  1. Reinstall the wiper HI relay.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Turn the windshield wiper switch to the Low position.
  4. Using a test lamp test the output circuit of the wiper HI relay circuit at the windshield wiper motor harness connector.
Does the test lamp illuminate?		 Go to Step 8  Go to Step 2 
8 Test the Ground circuit of the windshield wiper motor for an open.
Did you find and correct the condition?		 Go to Step 12  Go to Step 11 
9 Replace the wiper relay.
Did you complete the replacement?		 Go to Step 12  -
10 Replace the wiper HI relay.
Did you complete the replacement?		 Go to Step 12  -
11 Replace the windshield wiper motor. Refer to Wiper Motor Replacement .
Did you complete the replacement?		 Go to Step 12  -

  1. Reconnect all disconnected connectors.
  2. Reinstall any removed relays.
  3. Operate the system to verify the repair.
Is the system OK?		 System OK Go to Step 1
