DTC B2964: Key-In Ignition Circuit Open Or Short To Ground: Testing

  1. If audible warnings system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If audible warning systems diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform audible warnings system diagnostic system check. See AUDIBLE WARNINGS SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe KEY IN IGNITION parameter in BCM INPUTS data list. If scan tool does not display YES, go to next step. If scan tool displays YES, go to DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Purple harness connector C2. BCM is located behind left side of instrument panel, to left of steering column. See Figure . Connect a test light between battery voltage and BCM harness connector C2 terminal A1 (Light Green wire). See Fig 1 . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  7 .

  4. Test Light Green wire between BCM and ignition key cylinder for an open or high resistance. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If an open or high resistance is not found, go to next step. If an open or high resistance is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  5. NOTE: Tan wire changes to Black wire at splice point S211. Splice point S211 is located in instrument panel wiring harness, behind left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column, about 8" (203.2.8 mm) from Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) breakout.
  6. Test Tan wire between ground point G203 and ignition switch for an open or high resistance. Ground point G203 is located below instrument panel, to right of steering column. See GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. If an open or high resistance is not found, go to next step. If an open or high resistance is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  7. Check for poor connections at ignition switch. If poor connections are not found, go to next step. If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  8. Check for poor connections at BCM. If poor connections are not found, go to next step. If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  9. Replace ignition switch. See IGNITION & KEY ALARM SWITCH ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  10 .
  10. Replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  11. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Reconnect any disconnected components and harness connectors. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria conditions. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If DTC B2964 resets, return to step  2 . If DTC B2964 does not reset, system is okay.
