Test G: Charge Indicator Always On

  1. Ensure battery is in good working condition. After ensuring battery is okay, go to next step.
  2. Observe charge indicator. Start engine. If charge indicator remains illuminated for 5 seconds after displays test, go to next step. If charge indicator does not remain illuminated for 5 seconds after displays test, go to DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Using scan tool, observe BATTERY VOLTAGE parameter in IPC data list. If scan tool displays 10-15 volts, go to next step. If scan tool does not display 10-15 volts, diagnose charging system problem. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  4. Replace Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  5. Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step  2 . If system operates properly, system is okay.
