Test Ad: Seat Belt Indicator Circuit Malfunction

WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Before attempting any repairs involving SIR, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  1. If preliminary inspection has been performed, go to next step. If preliminary inspection has not been performed, perform preliminary inspection. See PRELIMINARY INSPECTION  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe seat belt indicator while buckling and unbuckling driver seat belt. If system does not operate properly, go to next step. If system operates properly, go to DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT STATUS parameter in SIR data list. If scan tool displays BUCKLED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display buckled, go to step  7 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable SIR. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Disconnect SIR Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) harness connector. SDM is located under right front seat, under carpet. Disconnect driver seat belt switch 2-pin harness connector. Test Black/White wire between seat belt switch harness connector and Body Control Module (BCM) Black harness connector C3 terminal B11 for an open or high resistance. See Figure . BCM is located behind left side of instrument panel, to left of steering column. See Figure . If open or high resistance is not found, go to next step. If open or high resistance is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step.  10 .
  5. Test Black wire between seat belt switch harness connector and ground point G301 for an open or high resistance. Ground point G301 is located inside left door sill, forward of left front seat. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If an open or high resistance is not found, go to next step. If an open or high resistance is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  6. Test seat belt switch for an open. If an open is not found, go to step  9 . If an open is found, replace seat belt switch. After repair, go to step  10 .
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable SIR. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Disconnect SIR Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) harness connector. SDM is located under right front seat, under carpet. Disconnect driver seat belt switch 2-pin harness connector. Test Black/White wire between seat belt switch harness connector and Body Control Module (BCM) Black harness connector C3 terminal B11 for short to ground or short to voltage. See Figure . BCM is located behind left side of instrument panel, to left of steering column. See Figure . If short to ground or short to voltage is not found, go to next step. If short to ground or short to voltage is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step.  10 .
  8. Test seat belt switch for a short. If a short is not found, go to next step. If a short is found, replace seat belt switch. After repair, go to step  10 .
  9. Replace instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  10. Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step  3 . If system operates properly, system is okay.
