Test Aa: Malfunction Indicator Light Always On

NOTE: Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may also be referred to as SERVICE ENGINE SOON light.
  1. If powertrain control system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If powertrain control system diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform powertrain control system diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTC for Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool does not display any PCM DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool displays and PCM DTCs, perform appropriate test. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Observe MIL. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. If MIL is not on, go to next step. If MIL is on, go to step  6 .
  4. Using scan tool, command MIL on and off several times. If MIL does not illuminate and turn off when commanded, go to next step. If MIL illuminates and turns off when commanded, go to DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  .
  5. Repair short to ground in Brown/White wire between Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) harness connector B5 and PCM Natural harness connector terminal No. 5. See Figure and Figure . PCM is located in front left corner of engine compartment, inside air cleaner. After repair, go to step  7 .
  6. Repair short to voltage in Brown/White wire between Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) harness connector B5 and PCM Natural harness connector terminal No. 5. See Figure and Figure . PCM is located in front left corner of engine compartment, inside air cleaner. After repair, go to next step.
  7. Using scan tool, command MIL on and off several times. If MIL illuminates and turns off when commanded, return to POWERTRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If MIL does illuminate and turn off when commanded, go to step  2 .
