Fwd Axle Shafts: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix, 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, and 1996 Buick Regal. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Place Axle Seal Protector (J-37292 ) to right of transaxle, between 5 and 7 o'clock position, so protector can be pulled out after axle shaft is installed. See Fig 2 .
  2. Slide axle shaft/hub and bearing assembly through steering knuckle and into transaxle. Remove and discard seal protector. Ensure no pieces of protector are left inside transaxle.
  3. Loosely tighten hub and bearing assembly bolts. Seat axle shaft snap ring by prying on inner CV joint groove. Pry against frame or lower control arm. Ensure snap ring is seated by gripping inner CV joint housing and pulling it outward, away from transaxle. DO NOT  pull on axle shaft. If snap ring is seated, axle shaft will remain in place.
  4. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. DO NOT  reuse axle shaft nut. Check and adjust transaxle fluid level. Use Dexron-IIE or Dexron III transmission fluid on automatic transaxles.
