Steering Knuckle: Installation
- Install new bearing seal (if removed). Loosely install steering knuckle to strut. Install steering knuckle onto ball joint. Tighten retaining nut to specification.
- Check axle boot protector. Raise assembly with floor jack to where steering knuckle and strut bolt holes align.
- Align reference mark on strut and steering knuckle. Install strut-to-steering knuckle retaining bolts. Tighten to specification.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Install hub and bearing on steering knuckle. Lower vehicle and tighten hub nut to specification.
- On models with anti-lock brake system, loosely install bracket on steering knuckle. Bracket should be snug, but should move under hand pressure.
- Measure gap with non-ferrous feeler gauge. Adjust speed sensor gap between sensor tip and sensor ring tooth (on axle shaft) to .028" (.71 mm) by moving bracket. Tighten bracket mounting bolts to 19 INCH lbs. (2.2 N.m) and recheck gap. If using a new sensor, adjust so paper spacer rests on wheel speed sensor ring.
