Master Cylinder

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 1990 Pontiac Bonneville, 1990 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, 1990 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight, 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood, and 1990 Cadillac DeVille. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The Delco Dual Diagonal Master Cylinder is designed for use in a diagonal split system. The left front and right rear brakes are serviced by one piston and the right front and left rear are served by the other.

It incorporates the functions of a standard dual master cylinder with the proportioning valves built in. In addition, a quick take-up feature is incorporated which provides a large volume of fluid to the calipers and wheel cylinders at low pressure with initial brake application. The low pressure fluid quickly provides the displacement requirements created by the seal retracting pistons into the front calipers and spring retraction of the rear drum brake shoes.

The master cylinder is equipped with a low fluid switch in the plastic reservoir. When the brake fluid goes below a certain level, the switch illuminates the brake warning lamp on the instrument panel.
