Parking Brake
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 1990 Pontiac Bonneville, 1990 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, 1990 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight, 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood, and 1990 Cadillac DeVille. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
When rear drum brakes are serviced, parking brake linkage cable at equalizer must always be readjusted to prevent possible burn out of rear brakes.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel and drums. Make sure stops on parking brake levers are against the edge of the shoe web. If parking brake cable is holding stops off edge of shoe web, loosen cable adjustment.
- Measure drum inside diameter. Turn adjuster nut and adjust shoe and lining diameter to 0.050 in. (1.27 mm) less than drum inside diameter for each rear wheel. Install drums with at least 2 wheel nuts.
- Adjust brake shoe-to-drum clearance. Apply and release service brake pedal 30 to 35 times until clicking noise from self adjusters stops on both side of vehicle.
- Cycle brake system by fully applying parking brake with a pedal force of 100 lbs. (45 kg) and release. Apply and release parking brake five additional times as described above.
- Check parking brake pedal assembly for full release by turning ignition switch to "ON" and observing brake warning light. Light should be off. If brake light is on and parking brake appears to be fully released, operate pedal release lever and pull downward on front parking brake cable to remove slack.
- Remove drums. Adjust parking brake cable until a 1/8" (3.17 mm) drill can be inserted into space between shoe web and parking brake lever. Satisfactory adjustment is achieved when a 1/8" (3.17 mm) drill will fit into notch but a 1/4" (6.35 mm) drill will not.
- Install brake drums and wheels. Lower car. Check operation of parking brake.
