Disc Calipers & Pads: Removal

Depressurize ABS system (if equipped). Remove and discard 2/3 of brake fluid in master cylinder reservoir to prevent overflow during servicing.
NOTE: Do not remove all fluid or disconnect brake line or it will be necessary to bleed system.
Raise and support vehicle. Mark relationship of wheel to axle and remove front wheels. Reinstall two lug nuts to retain rotor while removing caliper. Position large adjustable pliers over inboard brake shoe flange and inboard caliper housing. Squeeze pliers to bottom piston in bore. See Fig 1 .

If removing caliper for service, remove inlet fitting bolt from caliper. Remove boots and mounting bolts. Remove caliper or support with wire from strut. Do not let caliper hang from brake hose, or damage may occur.
On clinched type pads, straighten out tabs on outboard shoe and remove pad. On spring mount type pads, use screwdriver to disengage buttons on shoe spring from caliper and remove pad. Remove inboard pads.
Inspect mounting bolts and sleeves for corrosion or wear. If necessary, replace with new parts. Do not attempt to polish or wire brush bolts or sleeves.
