Remove both lower catalytic converters near engine
Risk of scalding!
- Conduct all work in the vehicle wearing appropriate personal protective equipment only.
Collect and dispose of emerging fluids. Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.
Grease the threads of new oxygen sensors thinly and evenly.
For oxygen sensors that are reused, the following should be observed:
Thinly and evenly grease the oxygen sensor on the thread only. Do not clean the part of the oxygen sensor that does not protrude into the exhaust line (sensor ceramics) and do not grease.

Variant with gasoline particulate filter cylinder 1 through 4
- Unscrew all bolts and nuts (arrows).
- Remove the underbody planking (1).
Removing the stiffening plate
Secure component against falling.
Driving without thrust field is not permissible.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove screws (arrows).
- Pull out and remove the thrust field (3) on the covers of the steering assembly (2).
Removing the heat shields
- Loosen screws and nuts (arrows).
- Remove the heat shield (1).
- Loosen screws and nuts (arrows).
- Remove the heat shield (1).
Remove transmission crossmember .
- Support the transmission using special tools 0 495 498 (23 4 050) and 2 219 012 .
- Secure the transmission with the luggage strap (1).
- Release the screw (1) and remove.
- Loosen screws (2).
- Remove the transmission cross member (3).
Partially loosening the prop shaft
Damage to prop shaft during removal .
Non-observance of the removal guidelines for the prop shaft on the rear axle differential may cause severe damage .
- Do not disassemble the three-hole flange, flexible disc and prop shaft. The three-hole flange to the rear axle differential is balanced with the flexible disc and prop shaft.
- Loosen the recessed nut against the direction of travel in clockwise direction. The prop shaft must be loosened on the recessed nut only and exclusively in the direction of rotation otherwise the anti-twist lock of the bi-hexagonal flange nut is damaged.
- In the event of a damaged anti-twist lock on the bi-hexagonal flange nut: Replace the rear axle differential.
- Mark the installation position of the threaded connection (1) of the flexible disc (2) and the three-hole flange (3).
- Remove screws (arrows).
The identification makes it possible to install the prop shaft in the same position again. This should prevent a humming noise from the drive train during driving.
- Loosen the screws (1) on the central mount and hold down the prop shaft.
A major deflection angle of the prop shaft may damage the prop shaft and/or the joints.
- Tie up the prop shaft to the vehicle underbody.
Lowering transmission
- Lower the transmission with the special tools 0 495 498 (23 4 050) and 2 219 012 .
Notes on universal transmission support are a fundamental requirement for these repair instructions and must be complied with at all times.
- Transmission must be secured to the support with the tensioning strap (1).
- Release the nut (1).
- Release the nut (2).
- Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
- Unclip the differential pressure sensor (2) with the pressure pipe from the clamp (1).
- Unclip the pressure line (2) from the clamps (1).
- Guide in the differential pressure sensor downwards with the pressure line.
- Loosen screw (1).
- Slide the V-ribbon clip (2) toward the top onto the catalytic converter near the engine.
- Loosen nuts (2).
- Remove the catalytic converter near the engine (3) from the stud bolts (1).
- Feed out the catalytic converter near the engine (3) downward.
