Removing both cylinder heads
Risk of scalding!
- Conduct all work in the vehicle wearing appropriate personal protective equipment only.
Collect and dispose of emerging fluids. Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.
Grease the threads of new oxygen sensors thinly and evenly.
For oxygen sensors that are reused, the following should be observed:
Thinly and evenly grease the oxygen sensor on the thread only. Do not clean the part of the oxygen sensor that does not protrude into the exhaust line (sensor ceramics) and do not grease.

Remove left cylinder head
Prepare special tool (8.5 mm diameter)
- Prepare the special tool 0 494 116 (11 8 352) from the set of special tools 0 493 997 (11 8 350) in a vice.
- Mark special tool 0 494 116 (11 8 352) in area A = 50 mm.
- Set a punch in the center of the marked area.
- Drill a hole with a diameter of 8.5 mm.
- Loosen hose clamp (1).
- Pull off coolant hose.NOTE: To provide a better overview: Schematic diagram with partially hidden components.
- Release the wiring harness mountings (1) below the intake system.
Remove both exhaust manifolds
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove exhaust manifold (2).
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove exhaust manifold (2).
- Remove gaskets (1).
Release the cylinder head bolt at the timing case cover
- Release the screws (1) the timing case cover.
Release the screw of the slide rail at the cylinder head of cylinder bank 2
- Release the screw of the slide rail on the cylinder head of cylinder bank (1).
Improper screw length can cause component damage.
The use of screws of improper length can lead to component damage.
- Note the correct screw length.
- Install screws that correspond to the original length.
- Tighten the special tool 0 494 116 (11 8 352) from the set of special tools 0 493 997 (11 8 350) on the cylinder head with standard M8 screws (1).

Release cylinder head, left
Releasing the left cylinder head
- Loosen screws (1) to (10).
- To remove the cylinder head bolt (1) on the fifth cylinder, turn camshaft (2) with standard opened wrench (3) on the hexagon head.
The work must be performed with vehicle care to prevent component damage.
- Attach the special tool 0 490 567 (11 0 020)
on the retaining tab (1) and on the special tool 0 494 116 (11 8 352)
from the set of special tools 0 493 997 (11 8 350)

The work must be performed with vehicle care to prevent component damage. - Observe free movement of the tensioning rails and slide rails.
Risk of breakage.
- Carefully lift the cylinder head using a workshop crane.
- Turn the cylinder head to the V-area and feed out.
- Remove cylinder head gasket (1).
Remove vacuum pump
- Disengage the cable (1) from the clamps (2) and set it aside.
- Unlock and disconnect the vacuum line at the closure (1).
- Set the vacuum line aside.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Loosen screws (2).
- Feed out the vacuum pump (3) and remove.
Remove right cylinder head cover
- Unlock and disconnect the plug connection (1) on the pressure sensor for intake air pressure.
- Unlock and disconnect the plug connection (2) on the Valvetronic servomotor.
- Release the wiring harness mounting (3).
- Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
- Remove the cover of the positive battery cable (2) in an upwards direction.
- Loosen nut (1).
- Put the positive battery cable to one side.
Removing both VANOS solenoid actuators, exhaust of cylinder bank 1
- Unlock and disconnect plug connections (1).
- Turn VANOS solenoid actuator (1) about 50° counter-clockwise with the special tool 2 360 895 (2).
- Remove VANOS solenoid actuator (1).
- Turn VANOS solenoid actuator (1) about 50° counter-clockwise with the special tool 2 360 895 (2).
- Remove VANOS solenoid actuator (1).
Removing right mount
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove the right mount (2).
- Loosen screw (1).
- Determine screw type and select the matching socket wrench:
Screw type Matching socket wrench Hexagon screw (3) Standard socket wrench (1) Multi-tooth screw (4) Multi-tooth socket wrench (2) - Loosen screw (1).
- Place oil feed line to the side.
- Release the starter cable (2) from the clamps (1).
Releasing cylinder head cover of cylinders 1 to 4
Cylinder head cover: Cylinders 1 to 4
- Unscrew bolts (1) to (17).
- Feed out and remove the cylinder head cover in an upward direction.
Remove the electric coolant pump with the holder
- Loosen screws (1).
- Place aside the electric coolant pump with the holder (2).
Remove the sealing cap on the cylinder head of the cylinder bank 1
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove the sealing cap (2) on the cylinder head.
Checking the VANOS adjuster of cylinder bank 1
Check
- Check the lock of intake adjuster and exhaust camshaft adjuster.
- Position the open-end wrench (1) on the hexagon of the camshafts.
- Move the open-end wrench back and forth a little in the arrow direction.
The camshafts must be connected with the VANOS adjusters (2) with frictional connections.
Result
» Camshafts are connected to the VANOS adjusters (2) with frictional connections.
Measure
- Continue the repair with the next step.
Result
» If there is no frictional connection, the relevant adjuster must be replaced.
Measure
- Replace the affected VANOS adjuster.
Measure
- Check timing again.
Relieving the chain tensioner at cylinder bank 1 for checking or setting the valve timings
NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Make sure that the chain drive is loaded at the same time on the central bolt of the engine and on the VANOS central valve on the exhaust.
The movement of the chain tensioner piston must be observed in this process.
To do this, the following steps must be carried out at the same time:
- Keep the VANOS central valve on the exhaust under tension in clockwise direction with a support person.
The VANOS central valve on the exhaust must not be twisted.
- Turn engine counter clockwise at central bolt (1).
Slackening the hydraulic chain tensioner of cylinder bank 1
NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Position the special tool 0 491 012 (11 4 120) (3) in the bore and fasten the chain tensioner piston.
- Make sure that the chain drive is relieved at the same time on the central bolt of the engine and on the VANOS central valve on the exhaust. To do this, carry out the following steps at the same time:
- Relieve the chain drive clockwise at the central bolt.
- Relieve the chain drive counterclockwise at the VANOS central valve on the exhaust.
Removing hydraulic chain tensioner of cylinder bank 1
NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Feed out and remove hydraulic chain tensioner (2).
Preloading the timing chain of cylinder bank 1
Damage to timing chain or timing chain drive.
Turning the engine without chain tensioner or special tool can result in damage to the timing chain and timing chain drive.
- Always turn the engine with the chain tensioner or the special tool.
- Hand-tighten the bolts (1).
- Pre-tension timing chain on special tool 2 249 162 at hexagon screw (2) with special tool 0 496 778 (00 9 460) to 0.6 Nm.

Secure the engine in installation position at cylinder 1
- Position special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (3) on the vibration absorber.
- Position special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190)

.NOTE: Do not slide the special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190) (1) too far in; otherwise, it will collide with other components when the crankshaft is turning.
- Position reversible ratchet (1).
- Rotate engine on the central bolt until the special tool lines up with the engine block marks.
- Attach the special tool 0 496 366 (11 8 570) (3) to the vibration absorber with a screw from the belt pulley (2) and hand-tighten.
- With the crankshaft in the installation position, use the special tool 0 493 882 (11 9 190)
(1) to insert it onto the marks and fasten.NOTE: Description is for right component only.
The procedure on the left side is identical.NOTE: To provide a better overview: Schematic diagram with partially hidden components. - Ensure that the polished surfaces of the camshafts (1) point upward.
- Ensure that the rounded surfaces (1) are pointing down to the cylinder head.
- Check timing again and assess.
Check
- Check the camshaft positions of cylinder bank 1.
The cams (1) should be in the position shown.
The increment wheels (2) must be flush with the exhaust camshaft bearing cap and the intake camshaft bearing cap.
The ground surfaces of the camshaft must face up.
Result
» Camshaft position is correct.
Measure
- Continue the repair with the next step.
Result
» Camshaft position is not correct.
Measure
- Disassemble special tools 0 496 366 (11 8 570) and 0 493 882 (11 9 190) and remove.
Measure
- Turn engine at the central bolt of the crankshaft by 360° until the installation position (MP) of the vibration absorber is positioned flush with the marks of the engine block.
Measure
- Re-secure the engine in TDC setting with special tools 0 496 366 (11 8 570) and 0 493 882 (11 9 190) .
Installing the special tool to secure the camshafts of cylinder bank 1
If the check finds that the valve timings are incorrect, they must be adjusted.

Check
- Position special tool 2 249 117 (1) on the camshafts of cylinder bank 1.
- Check if the camshafts can be fastened with the special tool 2 249 117 (1).
- Check if the special tool 2 249 117 can be brought in contact with the cylinder head using the two screws of the cylinder head cover (2).
Result
» The camshafts can be fastened.
Measure
- Timings are OK.
Loosen screws (2).
Remove the special tool 2 249 117 (1).
Continue the repair in the next step.

Removing both right VANOS adjusters
Removing the slide rail of cylinder bank 1 (removal/installation/replacement of the VANOS adjuster)
- Loosen screw (1).
- Loosen screw (2).
- Remove the slide rail (3) of the cylinder bank 1.
- Loosen the VANOS central valve (1).
- Remove the VANOS central valves (1).
- Feed out and remove the VANOS adjusters (1).
Removing special tool for fixing camshafts on bank 1
- Loosen screws (2).
- Remove the special tool 2 249 117 (1).
Remove right cylinder head
Prepare special tool (8.5 mm diameter)
- Prepare the special tool 0 494 116 (11 8 352) from the set of special tools 0 493 997 (11 8 350) in a vice.
- Mark special tool 0 494 116 (11 8 352) in area A = 50 mm.
- Set a punch in the center of the marked area.
- Drill a hole with a diameter of 8.5 mm.
- Loosen hose clamp (1).
- Remove coolant hose.
- Release the wiring harness mountings (1) below the intake system.
Remove both exhaust manifolds
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove exhaust manifold (2).
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove exhaust manifold (2).
- Remove gaskets (1).
Twist the intake camshaft by 180°
- Turn the intake camshaft (1) with an open-end spanner (2) by 180° in the direction of arrow.
This consequently guarantees accessibility to the cylinder head bolts.
Release the cylinder head bolt at the timing case cover
- Release the screws (1) the timing case cover.
Unscrew the screw of the slide rail on the cylinder head of cylinder bank 1
- Release screw (1) of the slide rail on the cylinder head of the cylinder bank.
Damage of the engine and installed parts.
Non-compliance with the instructions for mounting and disassembly may lead to damage to the engine and installed parts.
- Comply with the regulations for the installation and disassembly.
- Perform work with vehicle care.
- Position the special tool 0 494 116 (11 8 352) (4) from the set of special tools 0 493 997 (11 8 350) in such a way that the special tool 0 494 116 (11 8 352) (4) is located on the cylinder head in the area (3) of centering sleeve on the drilled hole.
- Use standard nuts M8 (2) as distance element to protect the blind holes in the cylinder head.
- Use standard nuts M8 (2) as distance element to protect the centering sleeve in the cylinder head from deformation.
- Hand-tighten the screw (1) of the cylinder head cover.
Loosen right cylinder head

- Loosen screws (1) to (10).
