23 00 023 Removing And Installing Transmission (S5D310Z): Notes

NOTE: After completion of work, check transmission oil level. Refer to 00 11 229 OIL CHANGE IN MANUAL TRANSMISSION .

CAUTION: Use only the approved gear oil in this manual transmission.

Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the transmission.

Disconnect battery. battery positive lead from battery connection point. Refer to 12 00... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY .

Remove rear underbody protection.

Remove catalytic converter with center muffler. Refer to 18 32 040 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING CATALYTIC CONVERTER WITH CENTER MUFFLER (Z3 / S54) .

Remove cruciform reinforcement.

Remove heat shield (1).

Remove heat shield at front right.

Remove bracket (1) for underbody protection.

Unclip cables on transmission.

Release screw ring (1) several turns with special tool 26 1 040.

Tightening torque 26 11 3AZ. Refer to 26 11 PROPELLER SHAFT, COMPLETE .

Release screws.

Tightening torque 26 11 1AZ. Refer to 26 11 PROPELLER SHAFT, COMPLETE .

Installation:

Replace self-locking nuts.

Grip propeller shaft and release nuts.

Tightening torque 26 11 6AZ. Refer to 26 11 PROPELLER SHAFT, COMPLETE .

Bend propeller shaft downwards at center mount.

Detach propeller shaft from transmission output flange and tie back to side on vehicle underbody.

Release nuts and remove clutch slave cylinder.

NOTE: Pressure line remains connected.

Tightening torque, 21 52 5AZ. Refer to 21 52 CLUTCH OPERATION (HYDRAULIC) .

CAUTION: Slowly relieve tension on clutch slave cylinder as otherwise air will be taken in through sealing sleeve.

Detach locking clamp.

Pull shift rod (1) out of shift rod joint (2) and remove washers (3).
