23 00 023 Removing And Installing Transmission (S5D310Z): Installation:

Grease shift rod pin (4).

Large contact surface of disks (3) must rest on shift rod joint (2).

Detach cable from R gear switch.

Disconnect oxygen-sensor plug from bracket.

Attach special tool 11 8 022 to left and right control arms.

CAUTION: Position special tool 11 8 022 in such a way that engine oil sump rests safely on special tool.

Tight down knurled screws until special tool 11 8 022 rests against engine oil sump.

Release screws and remove cross-member (1) with rubber mount.

Tightening torque, 23 71 1AZ/2AZ. Refer to 23 71 TRANSMISSION MOUNTS .

Release knurled screws to lower engine and transmission.

CAUTION: Exhaust manifold must not rest on heat shield (visual inspection).

Lever out spring (1) with a screwdriver from lug (2) on housing.

Tilt spring upwards.

Pull out bearing pin.



Apply a thin coat of grease to bearing pin. Grease, refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids .

Release screws.

Tightening torque, 23 00 1AZ. Refer to 23 00 TRANSMISSION IN GENERAL .

CAUTION: Do not allow the transmission to hang off from the transmission input shaft as this will deform the clutch plate.

Pull out transmission towards rear and remove.



Pay attention to position of dowel sleeves (1... 2).

Replace damaged dowel sleeves.

Make sure cover plate is correctly positioned.

Remove release unit and release lever, clean and apply grease to relevant points. Refer to 21 51 500 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OR REPLACING CLUTCH RELEASE BEARING/LEVER .



Check lubrication of transmission input shaft for sticky consistency. Replace clutch disk if grease is sticky.

Check clutch plate for friction rust in taper splines and replace if necessary,

Mechanically remove old grease and lining abrasion from the taper splines of the clutch disk (with a cloth).

Clean and grease taper grooves and guide pins of transmission input shaft. Grease, refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids .
