- Remove heat shield (1). See Fig 3 .
- E46 only: release screws and remove exhaust bracket (1). See Fig 4 .
- Z4 only: release screws and remove exhaust bracket (1). See Fig 5 .
- Support transmission from underneath. Release screws and remove cross-member (1). See Fig 6 .
- Unfasten screws. See Fig 7 .
- Grip propeller shaft and release nuts. See Fig 8 . Bend propeller shaft downwards at center bearing. Detach propeller shaft from transmission output flange and tie back to side on vehicle underbody.
- Lower transmission. E46 only: Lower transmission until cylinder head touches bulkhead. Suspend Special Tool (11 8 022) from left and right control arms. See Fig 9 . Tighten down knurled screws until special tool rests against engine oil sump.

CAUTION:
Position special tool so that engine oil sump is securely resting on special tool.
CAUTION:
Relieve tension on clutch slave cylinder slowly when removing; otherwise air will be drawn in through sealing sleeve.
CAUTION:
DO NOT allow the transmission to hang from the transmission input shaft as this will deform the clutch plate.
