Dismantling spring strut

NOTE:
Description is for left component only. Procedure on the right side is identical.
Preliminary work
- Refer to REMOVING FRONT LEFT OR RIGHT WHEEL .
- Refer to LOOSENING THE OUTPUT SHAFT FROM THE WHEEL BEARING .
- Refer to REMOVING THE COVER IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT ON THE REAR LEFT OR RIGHT .
- Refer to REMOVING THE SIDE HOOD SEAL ON THE LEFT OR RIGHT .
- Refer to PARTIALLY DETACHING SPRING STRUT IN FRONT .
- Refer to RELEASING THE UPPER WISHBONE FROM THE SWIVEL BEARING .

RISK OF DAMAGE
Damage of the coil spring.
Any use of faulty protective inserts leads to coil spring damage. Faulty protective inserts may lead to a cracked coil spring (corrosion).

- Check the protective insert for wear or damage and if necessary, replace the protective inserts.
- Clamp special tool 0 493 556 (31 3 341) in vice.
- Attach the special tool 2 318 833 from the top to the special tool 0 493 556 (31 3 341) until you can her and feel the retaining bolts engage.
- Check position of the special tool 2 318 833 and correct if necessary.
Prepare pressure plates
- Mount the special tool 2 359 293 to the special tool 2 318 833 .
- Prepare special tool 2 318 833 2 x and always use with the protective insert!
- Set special tool 0 493 556 (31 3 341)
to dimension A.
Dimension A = 140 mm
NOTE: Schematic diagram is for example purposes. Some parts may differ in certain details. - Clean coil spring to remove heavy contamination.
- Attach the spring strut (1) to the coil spring with the special tool 2 318 833 .
- Make sure that the coils of the coil spring are completely placed into the recesses of the special tool 2 318 833
.
- Tension the coil spring until dimension (B) is reached at the special tool 0 493 556 (31 3 341)
.
Dimension B =95 mm
It is essential to ensure that the dimension does not fall below dimension (B).
Remove the spring strut support bearing
NOTE:
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Releasing and tightening the nut on the support bearing or spring strut support bearing with an impact screwdriver is prohibited.

- Release the nut (1) with the special tool 2 360 213 , reversible ratchet with extension and socket SW10.
- Remove the spring strut support bearing (2) with the spring pad.
- Remove the spring strut (1) with the auxiliary damper, the protective tube and the spring pad from the tensioned coil spring (2).
- Remove auxiliary damper (1) and spring pad (2) from the spring strut shock absorber (3).
