Removing the engine from the lifting table
- Unlock and disconnect the coolant ventilation line (2) engine-side.
- Unlock and disconnect the coolant ventilation line (1) radiator-side.
- Loosen screws (3).
- Unclip the fuel lines in area (4).
- Equipment specification with gasoline particulate filter:
Release the nut (2).
- Equipment specification with gasoline particulate filter:
Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
- Equipment specification with gasoline particulate filter:
Release the nut (2).
- Equipment specification with gasoline particulate filter:
Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove the V-ribbon clips (2).
- Release the nuts in area (3).
- Remove the lower catalytic converter near engine (4).
- Unlock and disconnect the plug connection (1) from the VTG.
- Release the wiring harness mountings (2).
- Unlock and disconnect the plug connection (3) from the automatic transmission.
- Release the screw in area (4).
- Remove ground cable.
- Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
- Lash transmission with commercially available tensioning strap (1).
- Loosen nut (1).
- For equipment specification up to 31/07/2018
- Loosen screw (3).
- Release hydraulic lines (1) and (2) to the transmission oil cooler.
- For equipment specification up to 31/07/2018
- Unclip the transmission oil thermostat (1) upward from the decoupling elements (2).
- Remove transmission oil thermostat (1) with the wires.
- For equipment specification from 01/08/2018 on
- Loosen screw (1).
- Pull transmission oil lines (2) out of the thermostat (3) and set them aside.
- Catch and dispose of the leakage transmission oil.
- For equipment specification from 01/08/2018 on
- Loosen screw (1).
- Pull thermostat (2) out of the connections on the transmission and remove.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Lower and store front prop shaft (1).
- Remove cover (1).
- Release converter bolt (1).
Crankshaft at central bolt may only be turned clockwise.
- Prepare special tool 0 494 451 (24 4 160)
(1) with the shaped part 0 494 622 (24 4 164)
(2) as shown.
- Insert special tool 0 494 451 (24 4 160) into the recess of the transmission housing and apply slight tension using the screw (1).
- Screw the bolt (2) in to the stop.
- Hand-tighten the screw (1).
- Support the engine.
- Loosen the screws (arrows) and remove the transmission.
- Release retaining screws (1) on the lifting table (2) on both sides by a few threads.
Removing the Lambda oxygen sensor for the cylinders 1 to 4
- Unlatch the plug connection (1) upwards and disconnect.
- Unlatch the cable from the detents (2).
- Release Lambda oxygen sensor (1) with the special tool 0 491 074 (11 7 020) .
- Remove the Lambda oxygen sensor (1).
Removing Lambda oxygen sensor for the cylinders 5 to 8
- Unlatch the plug connection (1) upwards and disconnect.
- Unlatch the cable from the detents (2).
- Release the Lambda oxygen sensor (1) with the special tool 0 491 074 (11 7 020) .
- Remove the Lambda oxygen sensor (1).
- Rotate the sealing cap (1) of the expansion tank for the charge air cooler counterclockwise and open.
- Loosen screw (2).
- Suction the coolant using a commercially available syringe (1) or a suitable tool.
- Disengage retaining spring (1) upwards out of the connecting branch (2) of the coolant line with a screwdriver.
- Press in the locking mechanism (3) and detach the coolant lines (4).
- Do not use clamping pliers to disconnect plastic tubes (4).
- Catch and dispose of leakage coolant.
- Remove the expansion tank for the charge air coolers.
- Disengage the hose (1) and place to one side.
- Disengage the line (2) from the cable brackets.
- Loosen screws (1).
Removing wiring harness section for the ignition system of cylinder bank 1
- Loosen nut (3).
- Loosen screws (2).
- Disconnect the wiring harness section from the holders (4).
- Release cable section from the holders (1).
- Unfasten nut (1).
- Feed out ground cable and remove.
Remove wiring harness section for the ignition system of cylinder bank 2
- Loosen nut (3).
- Loosen screw (2).
- Release the wiring harness section in the marked areas (1).
- Loosen nut (3).
- Loosen screw (2).
- Disconnect the wiring harness section from the holders (4).
- Release wiring harness section with holder (1).
- Remove the wiring harness section.
- Remove holder for expansion tank (1).
- Secure the engine at the engine mounting brackets using a workshop crane and the cross-member 0 490 567 (11 0 020).
- Slide transmission (1) to the rear and disconnect from the engine.
Remove the clean air pipe of cylinder bank 1
- Press together the tank vent line (2) at the retaining device (1) and unlock.
- Disconnect tank vent line (2).
- Fold away the tank vent line (2).
- Unlock the retaining clips (1) in an upward direction, using a suitable screwdriver.
- Remove the clean air pipe of cylinder bank 1 (2) in direction of arrow.
Collect and dispose of emerging fluids.
Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.
- Loosen nuts (1).
- Detach hydraulic lines (2).
- Loosen screw (1).
- Loosen screw (1).
- Lift the engine from the engine mounts using a workshop crane (1) and the cross-member 0 490 567 (11 0 020).
- Unlock and disconnect the coolant ventilation line (2) engine-side.
- Unlock and disconnect the coolant ventilation line (1) radiator-side.
- Loosen screws (3) .
- Unclip the fuel lines in area (4)
.
- Rotate the sealing cap (1) of the expansion tank for the charge air cooler counterclockwise and open.
- Loosen screw (2)
.
- Disengage retaining spring (1) upwards out of the connecting branch (2) of the coolant line with a screwdriver.
- Press in the locking mechanism (3) and detach the coolant lines (4) .
- Do not use clamping pliers to disconnect plastic tubes (4) .
- Catch and dispose of escaping coolant.
- Remove the expansion tank for the charge air coolers.
- Equipment specification with gasoline particulate filter:
Release nut (2) .
- Equipment specification with gasoline particulate filter:
Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
- Equipment specification with gasoline particulate filter:
Release nut (2) .
- Equipment specification with gasoline particulate filter:
Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
Remove near-engine catalytic converter at the bottom of the cylinder bank 1
Risk of burning!
- Any work must exclusively be carried out with an exhaust system that has cooled down.
- Release the nuts (1) on catalytic converter of cylinder bank 1 (2) .
- Remove the catalytic converter of cylinder bank 1 (2) .
Remove near-engine catalytic converter at the bottom of the cylinder bank 2
Risk of burning!
- Any work must exclusively be carried out with an exhaust system that has cooled down.

- Remove the catalytic converter of cylinder bank 2 (2) .

Removing the upper heat shield (engine removed)
- Loosen screw (1) .
- Feed out the gasoline particulate sensor holder (2)
with the sensor from the centering pin (3)

- Loosen screw (1) .
- Feed out the gasoline particulate sensor holder (2)
with the sensor from the centering pin (3)
.
- Release the wiring harness mounting (1)
from wiring harness (2)
.
- Disengage the hose (1)
and place to one side.
- Disengage the line (2) from the cable brackets.
- Loosen screws (1)

- Remove the holder for the expansion tank (1)
upwards.
- Loosen screws (1) .
- Place the holder for the pressure pipe (2)
to the side.
- Unclip the pressure lines from the clamps in the areas (1) and (2) .
- Remove the holder (3)
to one side.
- Loosen screws (1) .
- Remove the heat shield (2) upwards.
Remove upper catalytic converter near engine from cylinder bank 1
- Loosen screws (1)

- Loosen screw (2) .
- Slide V-ribbon clip (3)
onto the catalytic converter (1)
near the engine.
- Remove the catalytic converter near engine (1) upwards out of the holder (2) .
Removing the catalytic converter near the engine at top of cylinder bank 2
- Loosen screws (1)

- Loosen screws (1)

- Loosen screw (2) .
- Slide V-ribbon clip (3) onto the catalytic converter (1) near the engine.
- Remove the catalytic converter (1)
near the engine.
- Remove the catalytic converter near engine (1) upwards out of the holder (2) .
- Unlock and disconnect the plug connection (1) from the VTG.
- Release the wiring harness mountings (2) .
- Unlock and disconnect the plug connection (3) from the automatic transmission.
- Release the screw in area (4) .
- Remove ground cable.
- Unlock plug connection (1)
and disconnect.
- Lash transmission with commercially available tensioning strap (1)

- Loosen nut (1)

- Release hydraulic lines (1)

to the transmission oil cooler.

- Tighten screw (1)
by hand.
- Support engine.
- Loosen the screws (arrows) and remove the transmission.

- Secure the engine at the engine mounting brackets using a workshop crane and the cross-member 0 490 567 (11 0 020).
- Slide transmission (1) to the rear and disconnect from the engine.
Remove the clean air pipe of cylinder bank 1

- Disconnect tank vent line (2) .
- Fold away the tank vent line (2)

- Unlock the retaining clips (1) in an upward direction, using a suitable screwdriver.
- Remove the clean air pipe of cylinder bank 1 (2) in direction of arrow.
Collect and dispose of emerging fluids.
