Remove the engine
Engine damage due to missing motor oil.
Missing motor oil following repairs to the components in the oil circuit or replacement of the engine can lead to damage to the engine.

Suction the air conditioning
- See additional information.
- Press brake pedal.
- Loosen the collar screw (1).
Disconnect all negative battery leads

Remove the cover panel of the slave DME control device

- Use only distilled water as an auxiliary material during installation, no lubricants.
- Unlatch the cover panel of the slave DME control device (2) up and out of the clamps (1).
- Remove the cover panel of the slave DME control device (2).
Remove the cover panel of the master DME control unit

Removing the acoustic cover

- Remove acoustic cover (1).
Removing the control unit bracket for cylinders 1 to 4
- Loosen screw (1).
- Loosen the cable clip (2).
- Loosen screw (1).
- Disengage the wires and connectors (1) upwards on the adapter plate.
- Unlock and disconnect plug connections (1).
- Unlock and disconnect plug connections (1).
- Loosen the cable clip (1).
- Guide out and remove the control unit bracket (1) with the control units upwards.
Partially removing the vacuum pump
- Unlock and disconnect the vacuum line at the closure (1).
- Set the vacuum line aside.
- Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
- Unlock and disconnect the tank vent line (2).
- Release the cover (1) at the detents (2).
- Remove the cover (1) in an upwards direction.
- Loosen nuts (1).
- Remove positive battery cables (2) from the remote positive terminal.
Removing the fuel hose
- Protect the ignition coils from escaping fuel with a cloth.
- Unlock and disconnect the fuel hose on the retaining clip (1).
- Unlock and disconnect fuel hose (2) on the retaining clip (1).
- Remove fuel hose (2).
Removing mount for DME master control module support
- Disengage the positive battery cable on the holders (1).
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove mount for DME master control module (2).
- Unlock and disconnect plug connections (1).
- Disengage clip of the wiring harness (1) with conventional expanding rivet jack.
- Disengage the engine wiring harness on the holder (2).
- Unlock transmission wiring harness in area (1) and disengage upwards.
Removing holder of DME control unit for cylinders 5 to 8
- Unlock and disconnect plug connections (1).
- Loosen the cable clip (2) upwards from the adapter plate.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Loosen the cable clip (1).
- Loosen screw (2).
- Loosen connector holder (1) upwards.
- Carefully push the holder of the refrigerant line (3) aside.
- Thread out holder with the DME control unit of cylinders 5 to 8 (2) and remove.
Removing the cover in the engine compartment on the left
- Disassemble expanding rivet (1).
- Remove the cover in the engine compartment on the left (2).
Removing the cover in the engine compartment on the right
- Disassemble expanding rivet (1).
- Remove cover in the engine compartment on the right (2).
Release left front-end strut
NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Use of an incorrect tool (impact screwdriver) to release and tighten the screws.
Damaged thread.- Only use a standard tool (e.g. reversible ratchet) to release/tighten the screws.

- Release screws (1) and (2) the strut brace (3).
Releasing the right front-end strut

- Release screws (1) and (2) the strut brace (3).
Remove front cross connection
- Loosen screws (1).
- Detach the Bowden cable (1).
- Feed out the cross connection (2) with the holders (3) and remove.
Remove left intake silencer housing
Removing the left intake filter housing (equipment specification with refrigerant firewall)
- Loosen hose clamp (1).
- Unclip the line in area (2).
- Detach the bellows (3) from the clean air tube.
- Feed out the line in area (4) downward at the firewall.
- Carefully release the centering pin (2) at the intake filter housing (5) upwards and out of the decoupling elements (3).
- Unlock the detents (4) at the clean air tube (1).
- Remove intake silencer housing (5) towards top.
- Loosen hose clamp (1).
- Unclip the line (2).
- Detach the bellows (3) from the clean air tube.
- Carefully release the centering pin (2) at the intake filter housing (5) upwards and out of the decoupling elements (3).
- Unlock the detents (4) at the clean air tube (1).
- Remove intake silencer housing (5) towards top.
Remove right intake silencer housing
- Loosen hose clamp (1).
- Unclip the line (2).
- Detach the bellows (3) from the clean air tube.
- Carefully release the centering pin (2) at the intake filter housing (5) upwards and out of the decoupling elements (3).
- Unlock the detents (4) at the clean air tube (1).
- Remove intake silencer housing (5) towards top.
Remove the rear top cross connection
- Loosen screws (1).
- Loosen screws (2).
- Snap out the cable holder (3) in a downwards motion from the cross-connection (4) at the top rear.
- Guide out and remove the top rear cross connection (4) to the engine.
Removing fan cowl with electric motor
- Loosen screw (1).
- Unlock plug connection (2) and disconnect.
- Unclip and feed out wiring harness mounting (1).
- Loosen screw (1).
- F90 only:
Release all bolts (arrows).
- Push the front underbody protection (1) to the front slightly and guide out under the thrust field (2).
- Unclip the hose support (2) from the fan cowl (1).
- Guide out the fan cowl (1) upwards at the coolant hoses.
Only if work is performed on the removed engine
Risk of scalding!
- Conduct all work in the vehicle wearing appropriate personal protective equipment only.
Make sure the vehicle is operating temperature for engine oil service (engine oil temperature > 70°C).
- Pull cover of the oil drain screw (1) downwards and turn anti-clockwise.
- Release oil drain plug (1).
- Remove oil drain screw (1) with sealing ring.NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Collect and dispose of emerging fluids.
Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations. - Catch the motor oil with a suitable collecting vessel.
- Screw in the oil drain plug hand-tight.
Removing the stiffening plate
Secure component against falling.
Driving without thrust field is not permissible.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Remove screws (arrows).
- Pull out and remove the thrust field (3) on the covers of the steering assembly (2).
Drain the high-temperature coolant circuit
Collect and dispose of emerging fluids.
Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.
- Unlocking the retaining clip (1) on the flange of the coolant line (2) with a suitable screwdriver (3).
- Detach flange (2) of coolant line backwards.
- Unlock and disconnect the coolant hose in the area (2) at the retaining clips (1).
Partial installation of engine oil cooler
- Secure the engine oil cooler (2) from falling down.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Detach the engine oil cooler (2) downward from the snap-in lugs (1) on the crash pad.
- Remove the engine oil cooler (2) with the crash pads.
Disconnecting the transmission oil cooler line
Collect and dispose of emerging fluids. Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.
- Unlock the transmission oil cooler line (1).
- Disconnect the transmission oil cooler line (1).
Removing the left front bottom wheel arch cover
- Loosen screws (1).
- Guide the wheel arch cover (2) out.
Removing the front right lower wheel arch cover
- Loosen screws (1).
- Guide the wheel arch cover (2) out.
Disconnect refrigerant lines
- Loosen screws (1).
- Detach the refrigerant line (2) and set aside.
- Unlock and disconnect coolant lines (1).
- Place coolant lines to one side.
Removing the coolant hose between the coolant radiator and engine
- Loosen screw (1).
- Pull off coolant hose (2).
- Unlock and disconnect the coolant hose in the area (2) at the retaining clips (1).
- Remove coolant hose (2).
- Unlock the coolant line on the retaining clip (1) and disconnect it.
- Guide out the coolant line.
- Loosen screw (1).
- Guide out the intake line (2) entirely upwards and remove.
- Unlock and disconnect the coolant return hose (1) on the expansion tank.
- Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
Removing coolant pump for low-temperature, left
Releasing electric coolant pump of feed line from holder
- Unlock retaining lug (1).
- Turn the electric coolant pump (2) out clockwise and set aside.
- Unlock and disconnect the coolant hoses (1).
- Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
- Take out coolant pump.
Remove coolant pump for low temperature on right
Loosen electric coolant pump of return line from holder.
- Unlock retaining lug (1).
- Unscrew the electric coolant pump (2) counter clockwise and put it aside.
- Loosen wiring harness fastening (1).
- Unlock and disconnect the coolant hoses (2).
- Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect.
- Take out coolant pump.
Removing the rear diffuser
- Remove screws (arrows).
- Loosen nuts (1).
- Remove the rear diffuser (2) toward the front.
Removing the undershield on the left fuel tank
Removing undershield on the fuel tank on the right
- Loosen screws (1).
- Loosen screws (2).
- Remove the underbody paneling (1) at the fuel tank on the right.
Removing reinforcement strut
- Loosen screws (1).
- Loosen nuts (2).
- Remove reinforcement strut (3).
Removing rear tunnel connecting support
- Loosen screws (1).
- Loosen screws (2).
- Removing rear tunnel connecting support (3).
Remove exhaust system
- Unlock connector (1).
- Disconnect the connector (1) of the exhaust flap (2).
- Unlock connector (1).
- Disconnect the connector (1) of the exhaust flap (2).
- Use a suitable jack to secure the exhaust system (1) from falling down. If the exhaust system is drained while under tension, there is the risk that the retaining bolts (2) will break.
- Loosen nuts (1).
- Loosen screw (1).
- Lower the exhaust system holder (2).NOTE: The following step(s) must be performed if the listed component(s) is/are installed.

- Lay ground strap to one side.
- Loosen screw (3).
- Lower the exhaust system holder (2).
- Version with temperature sensors:
- Release the temperature sensors upstream of gasoline particulate filter (2).
- Release the temperature sensors downstream of gasoline particulate filter (1).
- Execution with RDE2:
Unclip connector (3) from the holder.
- Unlock plug connection (2) and disconnect.
- Unclip oxygen sensor cable (1) from the clamps.
- Unclip connector (3) from the holder.
- Unlock plug connection (2) and disconnect.
- Unclip oxygen sensor cable (1) from the clamps.
- Loosen union nut (3).
- Unclip the pressure line (2) from the holder (1).
- Loosen union nut (3).
- Unclip the pressure line (2) from the holder (1).
- Release nut (1).
- Release nuts (2).
- Release nut (1).
- Release nuts (2).
- Remove the exhaust system backwards.
- Execution without RDE2:
Release nuts 1.
- Slide the circlip (2) towards the rear.
- Remove the exhaust system backwards.
Removing the heat shields
- Loosen screws and nuts (arrows).
- Remove the heat shield (1).
- Loosen screws and nuts (arrows).
- Remove the heat shield (1).
Removing the prop shaft completely
Damage to prop shaft during removal.
Non-observance of the removal guidelines for the prop shaft on the rear axle differential may cause severe damage.
- Loosen the recessed nut against the direction of travel in clockwise direction. The prop shaft must be loosened on the recessed nut only and exclusively in the direction of rotation otherwise the anti-twist lock of the bi-hexagonal flange nut is damaged.
- In the event of a damaged anti-twist lock on the bi-hexagonal flange nut: Replace the rear axle differential.
Compliance with the following instructions is required to avoid a humming from the prop shaft after refitting the prop shaft.
- Before releasing the flexible disc screw connection (1) in front of the prop shaft, it must be marked with flexible disc (2) and three-hole flange (3) in a single plane.
- It is a must to reassemble the three-hole flange (3) with the flexible disc (2) in the same position.
- Loosen screws.
- Loosen screws (1).
- Secure the juncture shaft against twisting at the central universal joint using a suitable tool (2).
- Only completely remove the screws of central mount (1) after having opened the recessed nut.
Damage to rear axle differential.
Non-observance of the removal and installation guidelines may cause severe damage to the rear axle differential.
- Do not use the double hexagon head flange nut as counter support.
- Loosen the recessed nut in clockwise direction, see the direction of the arrow, using special tools 0 495 554 (33 5 070) and 0 496 959 (33 0 080).
- Do not use the twelve-edge flange nut (1) as a counter support.
Damage to the bellows on the prop shaft.
Non-use of the special tool may lead to damage to the bellows on the prop shaft.
The special tool must be used when removing the prop shaft, otherwise the bellows may be damaged with the mounting lever.
- Position the mounting lever (1) and the special tool 0 496 959 (33 0 080) between the prop shaft (3) and the recessed nut (2) with help from a second person.
- Push the prop shaft (3) out of the rear axle differential with the mounting lever (1) and the special tool 0 496 959 (33 0 080) .
Loosen ground strap from transmission
- Release the screw (1) and release the ground strap (2).
Remove the right engine mount reinforcement strut
Removing the spring strut holder on left and right
Loosen the output shaft from the wheel bearing
- Press brake pedal.
- Loosen the collar screw (1).
The output shaft is released from the wheel bearing.
Releasing the upper wishbone from the swivel bearing
- Loosen nut (1).
- Pull out screw (2).
- Release the upper wishbone (4) from the swivel bearing (3).
Secure the swivel bearing
- Fix the swivel bearing (1) to the body using special tool 2 413 317
in such a way as to prevent it from tipping outwards.
Do not allow the swivel bearing (1) to hang down from the brake hose!
Removing the spring strut holder
- Loosen nut (1).
- Remove the bolt (2).
- Loosen nut (1).NOTE: Counter-hold at the Torx socket.
- Release the anti-roll bar link (2) from the spring strut holder.
- Release the screw (2) from the spring strut holder (1).NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Failure to comply with the specification.
Component damage.
All specifications must be observed and complied with. - Expand spring strut holder (1) with special tool 2 414 636.
- Protecting the output shaft from damage with a towel is mandatory (2).
- Feed out and remove the spring strut holder (1) downward.
Removing the output shafts
Remove left output shaft

It is paramount to replace the radial shaft seal each time the output shaft is removed. - Secure output shaft (1) against falling out.
- Position the aluminum drift (2) on the output shaft (1).
- Knock out the output shaft (1) from the front axle transmission with an aluminum mandrel (2).
- Remove the output shaft (1) in the direction of the arrow.
Remove right output shaft

It is paramount to replace the radial shaft seal each time the output shaft is removed.- Secure output shaft (1) against falling out.
- Position the aluminum drift (2) on the output shaft (1).
- Knock output shaft (1) with the aluminum drift (2) out of the bearing support.NOTE: Description is for left component only.
Procedure on the right side is identical. - Remove the output shaft (1) in the direction of the arrow.
Loosening the brake caliper, left and right
NOTE: Perform the steps on the right and left side.Releasing the brake caliper
- Release brake hose from the brackets (1).NOTE: Only perform the operation on the left side.
- Release the cable of the brake pad wear sensor from the holders (2).
- Loosen nuts (1).
- Pull the brake caliper from the stud bolts towards the rear.
Do not hang the brake caliper from the brake hose.
- Knock out the output shaft (1) from the front axle transmission with an aluminum mandrel (2).
- Tie up the brake caliper (1) with the special tool 2 413 317 .
Releasing cable from vertical acceleration sensor on left and right
- Unlock plug connection (2) and disconnect.
- Remove cable (1) from holder (3).
Detaching the cable of the wheel RPM sensor on the left and right
- Open sealing cap (1).
- Unlock and disconnect the plug connection of the wheel speed sensor (2).
- Release the cable of wheel speed sensor from the bracket (3).
Detaching coolant hoses from the front axle support
- Detach all coolant hoses from the front axle support.

- Position mounts 40 at coordinates 7/1 and 7/8. A slight protrusion towards the lifting table is permissible.
- Position mounts 10 at coordinates 4/1 and 5/8.
- Position mounts 80 at coordinates 2/3 and 3/5 and 3/8.
- Position mount 70 at coordinates 3/1.
- Work surface B:
- Position mounts 80 at coordinates 7/4 and 7/5.
- Position mount 70 at coordinates 1/3.
- Position mount 40 at coordinates 3/7.
Mortal hazard!
- Observe Owner's Manual for vehicle hoist.
- Do not exceed the approved load-carrying capacity and weight distribution of the vehicle lift.
- Depending on the load situation of the vehicle: Perform weight compensation, particularly during removal of heavy components, e.g. engine.
- Make sure the vehicle lift complies with the relevant statutory or country-specific accident prevention provision and is serviced according to the regulations.
- Observe the instructions of the repair instructions when positioning the swivel arms.
- Provide the necessary weight compensation using sandbags (1).
- Position the lifting table under the front subframe.

with coordinates 7/1

Lowering the lifting table

- Support component using a jack.
- Secure component against falling off the jack.
- Secure the coolant line with coolant pump (1) to the vehicle.
- Store the engine oil cooler (2) on the front part of the lifting table.
- Carefully lower the lifting table.
When lowering, watch out for electrical lines, coolant hoses and colliding components.
