Check compression of all cylinders

Preliminary work

Risk of burning!- Perform all work only on components that have cooled down.
CAUTION: Swirling dirt particles caused by compressed air.
Injury hazard!- Collect dirt particles, e.g. when blowing out, use cloth to do so.
- Wear safety goggles.
NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Clean spark plug slot with compressed air.
The spark plug shaft must be cleaned using compressed air after having removed the ignition coils and before removing the spark plugs. After having removed the spark plugs, once again check the sealing surface for contamination and (if necessary) clean using a moist cloth or clean using compressed air.
Deposits that are not removed according to instructions may enter the combustion chamber and lead to uncontrolled combustion. Remaining deposits on the spark plug sealing surfaces may lead to leaks and the spark plugs may come loose during engine operation.
Spark plug threads must not be greased or oiled. Insufficiently tightened spark plugs may cause leaks and the sparks plugs may come loose during engine operation.NOTE: The description is provided only at one component. The procedure is the same for all other components.- Unscrew the spark plugs with the special tool 0 495 560 (12 1 220)
and an extension with joint.
Flexible ratchet extensions must always be used. If rigid mounting tools are used, there is a risk of insulator breakages.
Also, do not use a variable plug connection with locking capability as this poses a danger of insulator breakage.
- Unscrew the spark plugs with the special tool 0 495 560 (12 1 220)
and an extension with joint.

NOTE:
The description is provided only at one component. The procedure is the same for all other components.
- Unscrew sensor (1) from special tool 0 490 615 (11 0 222).
- Check the secure fit of the valve below.
- Prepare special tool 0 490 615 (11 0 222)
in conjunction with the special tool 0 496 306 (11 8 732)
and 0 496 107 (11 8 730)
.
- Screw special tool 0 490 615 (11 0 222)
with 10 Nm on the special tool 0 496 107 (11 8 730)
.
- Screw special tool 0 490 615 (11 0 222)
by hand into the spark plug thread (1).
- Connect special tool 2 410 242
to special tool 0 490 613 (11 0 220)
with the bayonet closure.
Screw in the 100-bar sensor (1) on the special tool 2 410 242 by hand.
- Connect the 100 bar sensor with the Integrated Measurement Interface Box (2).
- Connect network cable 1 with the Integrated Measurement Interface (2).
- Connect diagnostic system.
- Execute "Check compression of all cylinders" service function:
- engine
- Digital Motor Electronics
- Remove special tool 0 490 615 (11 0 222) .
Follow-up work
- Installing spark plugs of cylinder bank 2.NOTE: The description is provided only at one component. The procedure is the same for all other components.
- Insert spark plug (1) into special tool 0 496 065 (12 1 230)
.NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Do not drop spark plug into spark plug shaft! This can lead to a reduction of the electrode gap and can thus impair smooth running of the engine, especially in idle position. - Make sure the spark plug does not fall into the spark plug shaft.
- First screw spark plugs into the engine using special tool 0 496 065 (12 1 230)
and tighten manually.NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Only a swiveling extension for the reversible ratchet may be used. Rigid mounting tool and variable plug connections with rigid option may not be used; there is a risk that the insulator breaks. - Tighten spark plugs with a torque wrench, special tool 0 496 065 (12 1 230) and extension with joint.

- Installing conduit on bank 2.
- Clip the wiring harness (2) into the clamps (1).
- Refer to INSTALLING COOLANT EXPANSION TANK .
- Refer to INSTALLING CONTROL UNIT HOLDER FOR CYLINDERS 1 TO 4 .
- Refer to INSTALLING HOLDER OF THE DME CONTROL UNIT FOR CYLINDERS 5 TO 8 .
- Refer to INSTALLING THE COVER PANEL OF THE SLAVE DME CONTROL UNIT .
- Installing the cover panel of the master DME control unit.
- Position the cover of the master DME control unit (1)
- Engage the cover panel of the master DME control unit (1) downwards with the clamps (2) and the guide pins (3) in the carrier plate of the DME.
- Refer to INSTALLING ACOUSTIC COVER .
