Commissioning of exchange engine (oil circuit, cooling system, cylinder liners)
Commissioning of exchange engine (oil circuit, cooling system, cylinder liners)
Attention!
Risk of damage!
Engine start is not allowed before commissioning of the oil circuit.
After repair of the components in the oil circuit, the engine must not be started.
The commissioning of the oil circuit takes place in 2 steps:
- Crank the crankshaft drive without ignition and injection, only with the RPM of the starter motor.
- Short engine running at maximum oil pressure and additionally actuated oil spray nozzles.
Sufficient oil supply must be ensured. This is particularly important if a replacement of the engine is being performed (exchange engine).
Exchange engines are not pre-filled with engine oil!
This service function includes oiling of the cylinder liners and, for efficiency reasons, simultaneous bleeding of the cooling system. Valid for: N63TU2, N63TU3, N74TU2.
After repair work exclusively on the oil circuit, the following service function can also be carried out for these engines (no special oiling of the cylinder liners, no simultaneous bleeding of the cooling system):
Description of the test module: Commissioning of the oil circuit and cooling system bleeding
- Thorough oil lubrication of the engine with the starter motor without ignition and injection
- Always use a battery charger to ensure that the output of the starter motor is sufficient.
- Deactivation of ignition and injection.
Unplug the connector A46*6B from the engine control unit according to the wiring diagram.
In the case of V-engines, unplug the connector A45*6B from the Digital Motor Electronics 2 (DME 2) according to the wiring diagram.
- The oil pressure, the RPM of the starter motor and the time for the oiling are graphically displayed in the test module.
- Press the brake pedal and the clutch pedal (in manual transmission) and keep it pressed.
- Starting procedure: Press the Start/Stop button briefly (for a short period).
The starter motor is normally activated automatically for up to about 16 seconds.
- If, contrary to expectations, the starter motor only turns for a short time: Repeat the starting procedure and press the Start/Stop button again, several times if necessary. The time period during which the starter motor is rotating are added up until sufficient oiling has been achieved.
- The graphic display is ended automatically. Follow the instructions in the test module.
- Do not press the brake pedal and the clutch pedal (in manual transmission) any more.
- Activation of ignition and injection
Connect the connector A46*6B to the engine control unit according to the wiring diagram.
In case of V-engines, reconnect the connectors A46*6B and A45*6B to both engine control units according to the wiring diagram.
- Adjust maximum oil pressure (activate transport mode)
The oil pump is regulated by pressure. In transport mode, the oil pump is actuated with full power. This is why the Digital Motor Electronics (DME) is switched to transport mode.
- Automatic cooling system bleeding
(only certain 8-cylinder engines and 12-cylinder engines, see note below)
The cooling system bleeding is performed with a running engine. At the same time, the cylinder liners are oiled.
During the automated cooling system bleeding procedure, the actuators in the cooling system are activated and the cooling system is vented by means of automatic press on accelerator.
The automated cooling system bleeding procedure is ended automatically (electric coolant pump off).
At maximum oil pressure, the oil spray nozzles for cooling the piston crown are activated and the cylinder liners are coated with oil.
- Oil the cylinder liners
At maximum oil pressure, the oil spray nozzles for cooling the piston crown are activated and the cylinder liners are coated with oil.
- The transport mode of the engine control is deleted again
- Check of the oil capacity (observe instruction in the ABL)
- Check of the coolant level (visual inspection)
This ensures that there is the right oil quantity in the engine (not too much and not too little). The electronic oil measurement only works when the engine is running and the operating temperature is sufficiently high. Therefore, the electronic oil measurement cannot be used for the oil-level check after a repair. There is a danger that there will be too little oil in the engine during the engine start.
