Wheel Bearing: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 34 other vehicles, including the 2006 BMW M3, 2006 BMW 330Ci, 2006 BMW 325Ci, 2005 BMW M3, and 2005 BMW 330i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise and support front of vehicle. Remove wheel assembly.
  2. Remove brake disc and ABS pulse sensor. See BRAKE DISC and REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
  3. Remove sealing cap with screwdriver/chisel. See Fig 1.
  4. Release collar nut with cross-cut chisel and remove with special tool (31 2 080). See Fig 2.
  5. Pull off bearing unit with special tool (33 2 116, 33 4 201/202/203). Hold special tool on with wheel lug bolts. See Fig 3.
  6. If necessary, pull inner bearing race off axle stub. Attach special tool (33 4 406/401) to inner bearing race and compress until special tool can still just be turned. Withdraw inner bearing race with special tool (33 4 402). See Fig 4.
  7. To withdraw inner bearing race without special tool: if inside bearing inner ring remains on stub axle after pulling off wheel bearing unit, unscrew guard plate. If necessary, bend back dust guard plate so that guard plate can be removed. See Figure.
  8. Bend back dust guard plate (1). Fit pulling off claws of special tool (00 7 500) behind bearing inner race (2). Pull off bearing inner race with special tools (00 7 500 and 31 2 106). See Fig 5.
