Front Suspension Assembly: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 34 other vehicles, including the 2006 BMW M3, 2006 BMW 330Ci, 2006 BMW 325Ci, 2005 BMW M3, and 2005 BMW 330i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove wheel assembly.
  2. Remove engine underguard. See 51 11 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE FRONT BUMPER (FROM 10/01)
  3. Remove brake caliper. See CALIPER ASSEMBLY , and secure assembly to body using wire. Brake lines remain connected.
  4. Remove ABS pulse sensor line.
  5. Remove reinforcement cross brace. See REINFORCEMENT CROSS BRACE .
  6. Remove reinforcement plate. See REINFORCEMENT PLATE .
  7. Unscrew left and right nuts, and force off steering tie rod on left and right with special tool (32 3 090). See Figure.
  8. Unfasten screws, and tie steering gear back. See Fig 1.
  9. Remove link (1) on left and right of stabilizer bar (2). Grip with open end wrench. Secure with adhesive tape to spring strut. See Fig 2.
  10. Remove retaining bracket (1) of angle joint from control arm (2). See Figure.
  11. Remove control arm bracket from engine support on left and right. See Fig 3.
  12. Assemble special tool (00 0 200) with special tool (00 0 201/202/204/208) and install. Secure special tool (00 0 200) to front suspension eye on engine. See Fig 4.
  13. Tighten screws (1, 2). See Fig 5.
  14. Suspend engine in installation position. Unfasten left and right engine mounts from front axle support.
  15. WARNING: No one is permitted to stand underneath the front axle. Release screws from side.
  16. Lower car until rear wheels touch ground. Support front axle support in middle with workshop hoist. Remove front axle support from engine support on left and right.
  17. Remove nuts from top of strut assemblies. Release only one nut if there is no centering pin (1). Position of threaded pin to wheel arch must be marked exactly. This ensures that the original camber is retained during installation. See Figure.
  18. Remove support bearing from wheel arch on left and right. SUPPORT BEARINGS ON SPRING STRUT SHOCK ABSORBERS 
  19. CAUTION: Spring struts must not tilt or hang outwards to prevent damage to ball joints and side walls.
  20. Raise car. Each spring strut must be held by a person.
