Control Arm Brackets: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 34 other vehicles, including the 2006 BMW M3, 2006 BMW 330Ci, 2006 BMW 325Ci, 2005 BMW M3, and 2005 BMW 330i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. A control arm with pin shape (A) must be replaced. Only control arms with pin shape (B) may be fitted. See Fig 1.
  2. Mark out measurement (A) at bottom of control arm pin. A equals 11.4-11.5 inches (289.9-291.9 mm). See Fig 2.
  3. CAUTION: If the position of the rubber mount is not strictly adhered to, this will result in impaired vehicle handling and early rubber mount wear.
  4. Outer edge (B) of rubber mount must be flush with marked measurement (A). See Fig 3.
  5. Coat control arm pin and rubber mount bushing with low-surface-tension water. Mix one part soap to 20 parts water.
  6. Ensure positive locking (1) of bushing and control arm pin. The larger diameters of the bores (2) point to the engine support. See Fig 4.
  7. On control arm without opening, screw special tools (31 2 156/158) onto control arm until hand tight. Pull new bracket onto control arm up to marking with special tools (00 7 500) and (31 2 154/157). Relieve tension on special tool. Check position of rubber mount to marking (measurement A) and correct of necessary. See Fig 5.
  8. On control arm with opening, attach special tool (31 2 153) with extensions (1) from puller set to control arm opening. Pull new bracket onto control arm up to mark with special tool (00 7 500) and (31 2 152/154/157). Relieve tension on special tool. Check position of rubber mount to marking (measurement A) and correct if necessary. See Fig 6.
  9. Installation is reverse of removal. Damaged threads on engine mounts can be repaired with Helicoil M12 x 1.5 threaded inserts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. After installation, check freedom of movement of other components to control arm bracket.

    CAUTION: If the position of the rubber mount is not strictly adhered to, this will result in impaired vehicle handling and early rubber mount wear.
  1. Mark out measurement (A) at bottom of control arm pin. A equals 11.7-11.9 inches (297-301 mm). See Figure.
  2. Coat control arm pin and rubber mount bushing with low-surface-tension water. Mix one part soap to 20 parts water.
  3. Ensure positive locking (1) of bushing and control arm pin. The larger diameters of the bores (2) point to the engine support. See Figure.
  4. Attach special tool (31 2 153) with extensions (1) from puller set to control arm opening. Install new bracket on control arm with special tools (00 7 500) and (31 2 152/154/157). Edge of inner sleeve of rubber mount must be flush with marking (A). See Figure.
  5. Relieve tension on special tool. Check position of rubber mount to marking (measurement A) and correct if necessary.
  6. Balance of installation is reverse of removal. Damaged threads on engine mounts can be repaired with Helicoil M12 x 1.5 threaded inserts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
