CV Joint Boot (Rear): Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 120 other vehicles, including the 2006 BMW M3, 2006 BMW 330Ci, 2006 BMW 325Ci, 2005 BMW M3, and 2005 BMW 330xi. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: When replacing, use a complete CV joint boot repair kit. Kit will include a new boot, clamps, special lubricant and inner CV joint circlip.
  1. Remove axle shaft. See DRIVE AXLE SHAFTS (REAR) .
  2. Press off sealing cover (1). See Fig 1.
  3. Release hose clamps (2). Press off cap (3) with rubber boot. Remove circlip (4). See Fig 2.
  4. Place axle and CV joint on a hydraulic press so CV joint inner hub is supported on press. See Fig 3. Using a suitable adapter, press axle shaft from CV joint.
  5. Clean all lubricant off axle shaft splines and inner CV joint splines. Check joint for dirt or damage.
  6. NOTE: Do not disassemble joint if not absolutely necessary.
  7. If the joint has to be disassembled, mark positions of ball hub, ball cage and joint with respect to each other using an electric inscriber. See Fig 4.
  8. Release hose clamps (5 and 6). Pull rubber gaiter over splined shaft. See Fig 5.
