The 3-series BMW models feature independent rear suspension and the drive axles must be able to move at an angle, following movement of rear suspension. To accomplish this, a constant velocity (CV) joint is located at each end of each drive axle. Drive axle inner CV joint is bolted to the final drive flange of rear differential. On the outer CV joint, splined axle engages with splines in wheel drive flange and is secured by a large collar nut except on Z3 which has a large nut.

On some models drive axle shafts differ in length. Mark these, if necessary, to replace correctly.

Each CV joint is packed with a special lubricant and is sealed by a rubber boot. CV joint boots should be inspected periodically to ensure they are in good condition. A damaged boot will let in dirt which will quickly destroy the joint. CV joints are not serviceable and must be replaced. The inner CV joint can be replaced separately, but the outer CV joint can not. If the outer CV joint requires replacement, the outer joint and drive axle must be replaced as a single unit.
