Side Impact Head Protection System (HPS)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2000 BMW Z3, 2000 BMW 328i, 2000 BMW 323i, 1999 BMW Z3, and 1999 BMW M3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Side impact Head Protection System (HPS) consists of air bag modules which are installed along both A-pillars, over front doors and extend slightly beyond B-pillar. They provide additional protection for the driver and front passenger in the event of a severe side impact. Module consists of an inflatable tube-shaped air bag, gas generator, and igniter. The gas generator is located in the lower A-pillar in the hinge area. Air bag fully inflates in about 35 milliseconds. Gas is then released through a filtered vent causing it to deflate. Not all vehicles are equipped with this system.
