Removal & Installation (3-Series - E46)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 82 other vehicles, including the 2006 BMW M3, 2006 BMW 330Ci, 2006 BMW 325Ci, 2005 BMW M3, and 2005 BMW 745i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove fuel from fuel tank. Unfasten Bowden cable on handbrake lever. Remove exhaust system. Remove propeller shaft. Remove under-car tank trim on left side of vehicle. See Fig 1.
  2. Remove lip behind wheel on left side of vehicle. See Fig 2. Remove tank trim on right. See Fig 3. Remove lip on right. See Fig 4. Remove handbrake cables from guide tubes. See Fig 5.
  3. Release hose clips and detach fuel feed and return lines. See Fig 6. Release hose clip and detach fuel filler pipe/fuel tank connecting hose from fuel tank. See Fig 7. Support tank over a wide area with lifting equipment. Unfasten hex nut. See Fig 8. Release nut and remove retaining strap on both sides. See Fig 9.
  4. Lower fuel tank and disconnect electrical connections. Release hose clip and detach vent line. See Fig 10. Remove fuel tank toward bottom. To install, reverse removal procedure. Note position of guide on lip during installation. Replace hose clips.
