Filling the high-temperature coolant circuit with the vacuum filler
Vacuum filling equipment
Vacuum filling equipment - connected to the coolant expansion tank
- Vacuum filling equipment with pressure gauge and shutoff valves
- Filling hose
- Fluid tank with coolant
- Venturi nozzle
- Compressed air connection (7 bar)
- Exhaust hose (route exhaust hose into a collecting vessel)
Precondition
The coolant expansion tank of the cooling system must be empty. There must be sufficient pre-mixed coolant in the coolant reservoir of the vacuum filler, 1 I to 2 I more than the full quantity prescribed for the vehicle. The liquid reservoir of the vacuum filler must be positioned at the same height as the coolant expansion reservoir.
Compressed air connection with 7 bar pressure must be available. Heating must be set to maximum temperature.
The vacuum filling device must be functional and free of dirt.
Notes for working on the engine cooling system.
For additional information see: NOTES FOR WORKING ON THE COOLING SYSTEM .
Immobilization period-long fill of coolant!
Do not reuse used coolant.
The coolant must be replaced when replacing and removing components which depend on the anti-corrosion effect of the coolant. The cooling system must therefore be emptied and refilled.
In the case of other removal work involving the draining of part quantities of coolant, the coolant level must be topped up with new coolant.
Filling without the vacuum filling equipment (watering can filling) is not permitted.
Failure to observe these instructions may result in component or engine damage. The filling specification must be observed.
It is essential to visually check the vacuum filling equipment before use to check that it is functioning correctly and clean.
It is not permissible to operate the vehicle if the filling procedure has not been fully completed. Otherwise there may be functional limitations (degradation) or overheating.
A bleeding procedure is required after a part has been exchanged in the cooling system and/or after refilling the cooling system.
It must be ensured that the ignition (terminal 15) is switched off before filling with the vacuum filling equipment.
Not the type of coolant
Coolant in the collecting vessel of vacuum filling equipment
Choose the correct coolant for filling.
In general, a vehicle must be filled with the coolant with which it was delivered from the plant.
- G48 (Blue) (BMW UC-87)
Must not be mixed with i3 Coolant or G30 MINI Diesel W16 or HT12 (Pink), HT12 (Green).
- i3 Coolant (Blue) (BMW LC-13)
Is exclusively used for i3 heater circuit. i3 Coolant must not be added to other coolant circuits or be mixed with other coolants.
- HT12 (Pink) (BMWUC-18)
Must not be mixed with i3 Coolant or G30 MINI Diesel W16 or G48 (Blue).
- HT12 (Green) (BMWUC-18)
Must not be mixed with i3 Coolant or G30 MINI Diesel W16 or G48 (Blue).
- G30 (Pink) (BMW UC-07)
May only be used for MINI Diesel W16. G30 must not be added to other coolant circuits or mixed with other coolants.
Damage to the engine or components in high-voltage vehicles
If the wrong coolant is used, corrosion or gelling can occur in the coolant circuit.
- Only use coolants that have been approved for the specific vehicle.
- Only fill the vehicle with the coolant with which it was delivered ex works.
- Only mix compatible coolants. The color does not indicate the compatibility of coolants.
- Selection of the correct coolant exclusively via part number.
When using vacuum filling equipment to fill the coolant circuit, you must use special tool 5 A31 EF2 (strainer) to protect the inside of the coolant circuit from contaminants.
- Attach special tool (2) 5 A31 EF2 to the vacuum filling device (1).
- Connect the special tool (2) to the appropriate adapter (3) from the special tool set 0 494 417 (17 0 100)
.
- Select a suitable adapter (Y) from the special tool set 0 494 417 (17 0 100)

- Connect the vacuum filler to connection (X) of the adapter.
- Close shut-off valves (A) and (B) of the vacuum filling unit (1).
(X) is the connection to the coolant expansion tank.
- Connect the Venturi nozzle (1) to the vacuum filling unit (2).
(X) is the connection to the coolant expansion tank.
- Connect compressed air (1).
(X) is the connection to the coolant expansion tank.
- Open the shut-off valve (B).
The Venturi nozzle generates a current noise.
- Open the shut-off valve (A) until the filling hose (1) is filled without bubbles.
- Close the shut-off valve (A) again.
» The filling hose (1) is deflated.
- Check coolant hoses for porosity and replace if necessary.NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
During vacuum build-up, the coolant hoses will contract. - Once a vacuum of -0.8 to -0.95 bar has been reached in the coolant circuit (duration approx. 2 minutes), close the shut-off valve (B).
- Check whether the shut-off valves (A) and (B) are closed.
- Disconnect Venturi nozzle (1).
Check
- The vacuum in the coolant circuit must be maintained for at least 2 minutes.
Result
» vacuum falls.
Measure
- Find the leek, repair it and start the filling process again.
Check
- The vacuum in the coolant circuit must be maintained for at least 2 minutes.
Result
» Vacuum remains constant.
Measure
- Proceed with the infestation.
- Keep the shut-off valve (B) closed during the filling process.
- To fill the cooling system, open the shut-off valve (A) to the liquid container of the vacuum filler.
- End the filling process when the pointer in the pressure gauge is at 0 bar or has stopped falling.
- If necessary, release the remaining vacuum. To do this, open the shut-off valve (B).
- Remove the vacuum filling unit with the adapter from the coolant expansion tank.
- Adjust the coolant level to the maximum mark.
- After filling the cooling system with the vacuum filler, also carry out the cooling system degassing routine.
