Removing airbag unit (except vehicles with M Sport steering wheel)

- Before performing any work on the airbag, always disconnect the battery ground lead from the battery.
- Airbag unit may only be set down with the cushion (airbag itself) facing upwards.

- Make sure the position (angle and inclination) of the tool is correct.
- When unlocking, do not use "levering" action. Instead, press in the Torx screwdriver toward the center of steering wheel only.
Remove airbag unit
NOTE:
In order to avoid damage on the steering wheel, there is a new additional procedure for disassembling the airbag in the sports steering wheel (this is not valid for M-sports steering wheel and standard steering wheel). See the following main work!
- Follow the exact same procedure when disassembling the airbag unit in the sports steering wheel.
- Insert the Torx screwdriver T25 (1) diagonally upwards in the hidden opening on the rear of the steering wheel until a springing kind of resistance can be felt.NOTE: To provide a better overview: Schematic diagram with airbag unit removed.
- Push in Torx screwdriver T25 (1) diagonally upwards in arrow direction and press the wire spring towards middle of the steering wheel to unlock the airbag unit.
- Repeat procedure on the left side and carefully lift the airbag unit.
- Disconnect the plug connection (1) and remove the airbag unit.
Removing the airbag unit of the sports steering wheel (new version to prevent damage to the steering wheel)

Removing steering column shroud upper section
NOTE:
Perform the steps on the right and left side.
- Unlock the steering column shroud upper section (1) with the special tool 2 298 504
and fold it upwards.
- Unclip the steering column shroud upper section (1) from holders (2).
- Remove the steering column shroud upper section (1).
- Turn the steering wheel 90° to the left until the lock is visible on the rear side using a mirror (1).
- Unlock the airbag locks using a mirror (1) and slotted screwdriver (2). To do so, see the following steps
- Subsequently, turn the steering wheel by 180° to the right and release the 2nd lock.
- Then turn the steering wheel further once again by 90° and release the 3rd lock (bottom).
- Unlock the spring (1) in the steering wheel (left and right) with a slotted screwdriver in the direction of arrow.
- Repeat procedure on the left side and carefully lift the airbag unit.
- Unlock the spring (1) in the steering wheel (bottom center) using a slotted screwdriver in arrow direction.
- Remove airbag unit.
- Disconnect the plug connection (1) and remove the airbag unit.
Fit steering column shroud upper section
- Clip in the steering column shroud upper section (1) to the holders (2).NOTE: Perform the steps on the right and left side.
- Clip in the steering column shroud upper section (1) into the guide (2).NOTE: Perform the steps on the right and left side.
- Press the upper section of the steering column shroud (1) downwards in arrow direction.
The upper section of the steering column shroud must engage audibly and perceptibly.
