Removing starter motor
Preliminary work
- Refer to DEACTIVATING ELECTRICAL SYSTEM .
- Refer to REMOVING THE CENTER UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
- Refer to REMOVING REAR UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
Precondition
Battery ground leads are disconnected.
WARNING:
Hot surfaces.
Risk of burning!

- Perform all work only on components that have cooled down.
WARNING:
Working on 12V electrical system.
Risk of short circuits! Risk of fire!

- Make sure that there is no charger connected to the jump start terminal in the engine compartment.
- Detach battery ground lead from battery.
- For auxiliary batteries: Detach battery minus cables from all auxiliary batteries.
NOTE:
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
When removing the starter, ensure that the lower acoustic cover is not damaged.
A damaged lower acoustic cover can only be replaced when the front axle is lowered.

- Release the nut (1) and remove the positive battery cable from the starter.
- Release the nut (2) and remove the cable (terminal 50) from the starter.
- Remove the cable (1) (terminal 50) from the starter.
- Loosen the clamp (2) and place the cable aside.
- Remove positive battery cable (3) from starter motor.
- Disconnect the positive battery cable from the clamp and place it aside.
- Remove the expanding rivet (4) from the acoustic cover at the rear.
- Loosen clip (5).
- Remove the expanding rivet (1) from the acoustic cover at the front.
- Remove the expanding rivet (1) in the center of the acoustic cover.
- Make sure that the acoustic cover (1) is not damaged.
- Carefully press the acoustic cover (1) to the side.
- Loosen screws (2).
- Carefully guide the starter (3) out in the direction of the arrow and remove.
